OESTROGENS IN THE LONG‐DAY PLANTS HYOSCYAMUS NIGER AND SALVIA SPLENDENS GROWN UNDER INDUCTIVE AND NON‐INDUCTIVE LIGHT CONDITIONS

Abstract

SUMMARYAn increased hiosynthesis of oestrogen-like substances occurs in plants growing under inductive photoperiods. Oestrogens appear at the time of flower hud formation and reach a maximum at the time of flower development. Three oestrogen-like substances were found in extracts from flowering plants of both Hyoscyamus niger L. and Salvia splendens Sellow. These substances differed both from one another and from the standard substances they were compared with except that one substance in Hyoscyamus may be oestrone.
