Oesophageal atresia and associated anomalies.

Abstract: SUMMARY Of 253 infants with oesophageal atresia treated over an eight year period, 122 (48%) had a total of 213 other anomalies. Most commonly affected were the cardiovascular (61 cases, 29%), anorectal (30 cases, 14%), and genitourinary (29 cases, 14%) systems. The VATER (or VACTERL) association was present in 10% of cases, but occurred more often in patients who had oesophageal atresia without an associated tracheo-oesophageal fistula (3/13, 23%). The level of the associated anorectal malformation was not as… Show more

“…identified 55%of his detectable malformations with 99% specificity and a false positive result of only 0.1 % in routine ultrasonography examinations. 10 Forty percent of our cases of EA had associated anomalies, a result similar to that reported by Chittmittrapap,5 and Spitz. Ultrasound diagnosis of EA was made at about 24 weeks of gestational age and was followed up by serial ultrasound antenatally.…”

“…It is usually associated with a tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF) [1,2] and affects approximately one in 2,500 live births [3]. The embryology of OA is incompletely understood [4], and over half these infants have associated anomalies [3,5]. The malformation itself and surgical trauma result in impaired oesophageal motility, a dysmotility predisposing to gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) and its complications [6,7].…”
