Odontogenic Cysts in Three Dogs: One Odontogenic Keratocyst and Two Dentigerous Cysts

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Odontogenic cysts, which showed cystic radiolucency in the jaw bone by radiographic examination and computed tomography, were enucleated by operation in 3 dogs. One dog had a odontogenic keratocyst in the incisive bone of the right maxilla and another 2 cases revealed dentigerous cysts in the mandible. These cyst walls were enucleated or transpired by semiconductor laser. Afterwards, osteogenesis was confirmed at the defective part of jaw bone by extirpation of the cyst in all cases, and no recurrenc… Show more

“…Surgery is the treatment of choice for a periorbital cyst. Either marsupialisation or enucleation is performed, depending on various factors-the size of the cyst, its status(unilocular or multilocular), and anatomical structures that are adjacent to the cysts [1,6].Computed tomography (CT) is one of the useful modalities for evaluating lesions in the human orofacial area [1]. However, to our knowledge, CT imaging of canine orofacial cysts has not yet been reported.…”

“…On the basis of our personal experience as well as published data (Watanabe et al 2004) it is possible to consider the OMS's classification of mandibular cysts in humans as also reliable for veterinary medicine. The high percentage of relapses with this disease make it necessary to excise the cysts completely (Baxter 2004;Watanabe et al 2004;Lemmons et al 2006).…”

“…Odontogenic cysts are not well documented in small animals. In dogs, dentigerous cysts, as well as the more common odontogenic cysts, are underreported because they often cause no clinical signs apart from tooth loss (Okuda 2001;Baxter 2004;Watanabe et al 2004;Lemmons et al 2006). The vast majority of cases of dentigerous cysts described in the literature in dogs are in small breeds, particularly brachycephalic breeds.…”

“…1 Types of odontogenic cysts reported in dogs include radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts, and keratocysts. 2,4,8,10,12 In contrast to other odontogenic cysts, radicular cysts are associated with an inflammatory infiltrate. 6 They are also very often found in association with a devitalized tooth.…”
