“…Since 1924, when T. cruzi infection in wild squirrel monkeys (Crisotrix sciureus) was described (20), sporadic human T. cruzi infections have been reported in the basin (21). However, this enzootic protozoan infection received attention only after 1969, when acute cases of human Chagas disease were described in Belém, State of Pará, Brazil (22,23). Further evidence shows that T. cruzi infections are endemic in the Amazon Basin (12)(13)(14)(15)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28) (Figures 1 and 2).…”

“…Em 1977 foram detectados os seis primeiros casos de infecção chagásica humana autóctone do Estado do Amazonas em piaçabeiros do Município de Barcelos 5 , surgindo novas publicações em 1978 6 . Por outro lado, já foram encontradas dez das 16 espécies de triatomíneos descritas na região, e mais de 100 espécies de mamíferos de pequeno e médio porte, naturalmente infectados com o Trypanosoma cruzi [7][8][9] .…”

“…In the State of Amazonas, chronic Chagas disease has lower morbidity than in classic endemic areas, appearing mainly in the latent form 1,5 . Chagasic infection was first reported in this state by Ferraroni et al 13 , who examined 25 individuals who performed piassava fiber extraction in the municipality of Barcelos, and found 6 individuals with positive serological test results. Cross-sectional assessments, including the clinical and radiological evaluations of anti-T. cruzi seropositive patients in the Rio Negro micro-region, ratified the high seroprevalence of chagasic infection in this region and showed a clinical profile of low morbidity and mortality in the chronic phase of the disease [5][6][7] .…”
