Soybean crop represents a large economic share in the Brazilian agricultural production. In Rio Grande do Sul (RS), with each new crop cycle there is an increase in the area under cultivation. In the lowland environment, the crop covers 5.4 million hectares, corresponding to about 20% of the State total area. Using transgenic cultivars whose main advantage is controlling target insects, as well as the reduced number of insecticide applications throughout the crop can be a viable alternative. However, the high cost of transgenic seed is considered as the main disadvantage in adopting this technology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of cultivars RR1 and RR2 in relation to the occurrence of caterpillars and stink bugs, as well as to evaluate the production cost. The experiment was set up at Embrapa Clima Temperado in the crop seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016, with conventional cultivars (BMX Potência (RR1 6.7)) and Bt isolines (BMX Ponta (IPRO 6.6)) and BMX Vanguarda (IPRO 6.0)). BMX Potência cultivar showed a higher incidence of defoliating caterpillars and Nezara viridula stinkbug, but it is the most indicated cultivar, among those evaluated, for the south lowland environment of RS, due to its yield and profitability.

The heteropteran predator Geocoris punctipes (Say) has been used in augmentative biological control since 2000 to control Lepidoptera. However, surprisingly, few data are available about the influence of temperature on its population development, which is of key importance to plan the number and moment of releases to obtain sufficient pest reduction. The objective of this study was to evaluate daily and total fecundity, longevity and life table parameters (m x , l x , r m , R, k, T and TD) of G. punctipes at constant (16.8°C, 21.5°C, 24.5°C and 28.3°C) and corresponding varying (day/ night) (21/11°C, 24/18°C, 27/21°C and 30/26°C) temperatures. Pairs of adult predators aged 24 h and originating from nymphs exposed to the same temperature regimes were kept at the above-mentioned temperature regimes in Petri dishes containing Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) eggs and an oviposition substrate. Tests were conducted in climatic chambers at the different temperature regimes and a RH 70 AE 10% and a 14L: 10D photoperiod. Reproduction, longevity and life table parameters were significantly affected by temperature, with clear differences between treatments at low (16.8°C, 21/11°C, 21.5°C, 24/18°C) or a high (24.5°C, 27/ 21°C, 28.3°C, 30/26°C) temperature regimes. Highest reproduction and fastest population growth of G. punctipes took place at average temperatures ranging from 24.5°C to 30°C, and neither reproduction nor population growth was negatively influenced by varying temperatures at any of the temperature regimes.

The (Calosoma granulatum Perty., 1830) (Coleoptera: Carabidae) is an important predator of agricultural pests. The knowledge about the spatial and temporal behavior and influence of the environmental structure may be fundamental for the application of conservative biological control. This study evaluated whether phenology of cultivated plants and meteorological factors influencing the occurrence and spatial distribution of the predaceous beetle (Calosoma granulatum) in soybean/corn crop. Three hypotheses were tested: H1: that this predaceous beetle occurs naturally in aggregated spatial patterns; H2: its presence/absence in agricultural fields is influenced by meteorolical factors; and H3: the presence of the beetle bank in crop fields affects the carabid spatial distribution patterns. To test these hypotheses, we measured annual population fluctuations to examine the influence of meteorological factors, and to determinate the spatial distribution using dispersion indices and probabilistic models based on the Calosoma granulatum frequency distribution in one hectare of soybean/corn crop using multiple regression analysis (stepwise). The results showed that population peaks of the beetle in soybean crop were coincident with their reproductive period regardless of meteorological factors. The analyses of the spatial distributions showed that Calosoma granulatum has a clustered distribution, and the highest numbers were observed in soybean crop. These results support the hypothesis that the beetles have an aggregated pattern. However, the hypotheses that the occurrence and distribution of this predator is directly influenced by environmental distribution factors and by the presence of herbaceous refuge is not supported.
