Objective: to verify the association between the qualification of nursing professionals and the occurrence of adverse events in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. Method: Cross-sectional and evaluation study conducted in six intensive care units of five public hospitals in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Data was collected from April/2017 to January/2018 through the use of a questionnaire to be completed by 143 nursing professionals and retrospective analysis of 79 medical records using the Neonatal Trigger Tool and Pediatric Trigger Tool instruments. The prognostic factors were professional training and the existence, or not, of a continuing education service; analysis was performed by logistic regression. Results: Detected 30 adverse events in 22 medical records analyzed. There was a prevalence of infection (n = 12; 40%) and skin damage (n = 9; 30%). Among the prognostic factors, continuing education was identified as a protective factor against adverse events (p≤0.05). Conclusion: Continuing education was associated with the prevention of adverse events in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units.

Involvement of companions in patient safety in pediatric and neonatal units: scope review

Objectives: to describe scientific evidence on the involvement of companions in patient safety, from their own perspective and health professionals’ perspective in neonatal and pediatric units. Methods: scoping review carried out according to The Joanna Briggs Institute’s recommendations, in eight databases, following the Preferred Reporting Items checklist for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist, between 2011 and 2021. Results: the 13 studies included highlighted the importance of companions’ involvement in patient safety and the prevention of adverse events. However, they pointed out failures in communication and weakness in the training of professionals, which were obstacles to their involvement. The strengthening of health education, multidisciplinary rounds and educational technologies were highlighted as strategies to expand the involvement of companions. Final Considerations: this study directs elements for health professionals and managers to rethink the companions’ role in patient safety and development of collective strategies.

Objetivo: averiguar o conhecimento de enfermeiros intensivistas acerca da prevenção e avaliação de risco relacionados a LPP e a importância da utilização de protocolos de cuidados de enfermagem. Métodos: Trata-se de estudo exploratório-descritivo com abordagem qualitativa. Os participantes do presente estudo são compostos por enfermeiros intensivistas assistenciais, enfermeira coordenadora da UTI e gerente de enfermagem, além das enfermeiras responsáveis pela Comissão de Curativos e Segurança do Paciente, totalizando dez participantes. Os dados foram coletados entre março e dezembro de 2019. Foram aplicadas entrevistas semiestruturadas individuais e posteriormente, as respostas dos entrevistados foram transcritas na íntegra e analisadas através do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo. Resultados: A análise dos depoimentos foi baseada em seis questionamentos, que resultaram em nove DSC. As respostas foram subdividas em “Categoria A” e “Categoria B” quando dois tipos de respostas diferentes foram obtidos. Com isso, os questionamentos 1, 2 e 3 apresentam DSC nas categorias A e B, enquanto os questionamentos 4, 5 e 6 apenas apresentam DSC na “Categoria A”. Conclusão: O estudo possibilitou uma melhor compreensão das condições vivenciadas pelos enfermeiros que atuam em UTI apontando potencialidades, dificuldades e limitações na prevenção e tratamento as LPP.
