Oceanic plateau of the Hawaiian mantle plume head subducted to the uppermost lower mantle

Abstract: The Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain that includes the Hawaiian volcanoes was created by the Hawaiian mantle plume. Although the mantle plume hypothesis predicts an oceanic plateau produced by massive decompression melting during the initiation stage of the Hawaiian hot spot, the fate of this plateau is unclear. We discovered a megameter-scale portion of thickened oceanic crust in the uppermost lower mantle west of the Sea of Okhotsk by stacking seismic waveforms of SS precursors. We propose that this thick cru… Show more

“…2 ). Nonetheless, a recent seismological study of a slab below Kamchatka was able to identify thick crust in the order of 20 km in a lower-mantle slab [ 98 ]. Once a slab can be firmly tied to lithosphere that subducted after initial collision, such as the overturned Himalayan slab that straddles the transition zone [ 11 , 38 ], such seismological analyses may provide novel constraints on their composition and crustal nature.…”

“…Some hotspot tracks end at subduction zones and it has been proposed that the respective LIP might have been accreted to the overriding plate, for example, for the Hawaii plume in Kamchatka and the Okhotsk Sea 175 . An alternative hypothesis is that the Hawaiian flood basalts might have been subducted into the upper mantle below Kamchatka 176 .…”

“…Over the last decade, studies on Shatsky Rise 307,308 have reinforced the idea that some LIPs might not be caused by plume head eruptions, raising the question whether Shatsky and other LIPs are the result of headless plumes interacting with overriding oceanic spreading centres. Similarly, it will be important to establish whether Cretaceous LIPs existed that could have formed from plume heads belonging to, for example, the Hawaii and Louisville mantle plumes, which, by now, could have been obducted onto land 110 or subducted into the upper mantle 176 .…”

“…The Hawaiian mantle plume was thought to have had a large initial size (radius > 1500 km) about 100 million years ago before the formation of the earliest crater, the related large igneous province had either accreted to the Kamchatka-Okhotsk region 15 or subducted beneath it 16 (Fig. 1).…”
