Chhana based milk products viz. rossogolla, kanchagolla,narampak sandesh and karapak sandesh are very popular in eastern part of India and gaining popularity in other parts of the country. A wide variation in manufacture method, microbial quality and shelf-life of these traditional milk products were observed by previous research. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of contamination of chhana based milk products available in Kolkata city with Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) serogroups. Random samples of different chhana based milk products were collected from different parts of Kolkata city in aseptic condition, cultured in selective media and examined for biochemical tests. Among 240 samples, E. coli was isolated from 67 (27.91%) of them. Potential EPEC was present in 52 samples (21.66%) and 55 of the isolates were EPEC. Eleven serogroups were identified viz. O26, O55, O111, O119, O114, O125, O142, O86, O126, O127, O128. Among all these serogroups, O55 (23.66%) was the most prevalent. Though recent studies on virulence factors indicate that not all strains serologically classified as EPEC are able to attaching/effacing lesion, it is believed that the isolation of EPEC serogroups from chhana based milk products represent a potential risk for public health particularly children, as well as an indicative of the presence of other enteropathogens. Considering the public health importance of sweetmeat consumers, the product should be prepared hygienically reducing the microbial load present in it. The result indicates that strict preventive measures should be adopted to ensure contamination free sweetmeats for the safety of the consumers.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157:H7 is responsible for intestinal and extra-intestinal disease syndromes in human. Isolation of the pathogen from animals, food, clinical samples and environment has been reported from all continents. A review of STEC O157:H7 in Africa from a structured literature search of the PubMed electronic database is presented. It describes the epidemiological status of the pathogen on the aspects of source, transmission, pathogenesis, disease syndromes, diagnosis, disease burden and the challenges in treatment and control strategies. About a quarter of African countries have reported isolation of STEC O157:H7 either from humans, animals, food or the environment. Different methods have been used in detection of the pathogen. Most reported human infections do not show temporal relationships with reports of isolation of the pathogen from other sources such as animals, water or food. Lack of a direct link between isolates from humans and other sources makes it difficult to point out incident specific determinants and direction of transmission. The aim of this review is to give an insight into the features of STEC O157:H7 infection in Africa and draw the attention of various stakeholders to the public health threat of the pathogen for possible interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral joint efforts in the control strategies.

Aim : The study was carried out with aim to isolate Escherichia coli from raw milk samples and determine antibiogram pattern of E. coli isolates. Materials and Methods: During 6 months duration of study a total of 100 raw milk samples were collected from different places in and around Anand city such as individual household, cattle farms, milk collection centres of Co-operative milk dairies and milk vendors. All raw milk samples were enriched in peptone water and inoculated on selective media and various biochemical tests were performed for confirmation of isolates. Antibiogram pattern of E.coli to antimicrobial agents was evaluated by disk diffusion method. E. coli isolates were sent to National Salmonella and Escherichia Centre, Central Research Institute, Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh for serotyping. Results: The result of present study revealed that out of 100 samples, 38 samples were found contaminated with E.coli. Antibiogram pattern revealed high resistance against ampicillin (100 %), whereas moderate resistance was observed for streptomycin (57.89 %), oxytetracycline (47.37 %) and amoxy-clav (42.11 %). Also lesser percentage of resistance was observed for co-trimoxazole (13.16 %) and chloramphenicol (5.26 %). Serotypes detected were O24 (7 isolates), followed by O36 (1 isolate), O89 (1 isolate), O91 (1 isolate) and O153(1 isolate). Conclusions: Results suggested a possibility of potential public health threat of E.coli originating from raw milk sources.
