“…Health-based guidance values (HBGVs) for perchlorate have been established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency [EPA, reference dose (RfD): 0.7 μg/kg bw/day, 2004], Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives [JECFA, provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (PMTDI): 10 μg/kg bw/day, 2011], and European Food Safety Authority [EFSA, tolerance daily intake (TDI): 0.3 μg/kg bw/day, 2014] . Nationwide dietary exposure risk assessment for perchlorate has been conducted in the populations of China, Europe, United States, Canada, Australia, India, and South Korea. ,− These dietary risk assessments of perchlorate exhibited great variation among different populations, and some groups, such as infants, have an estimated perchlorate exposure level exceeding the value of U.S. EPA RfD (0.7 μg/kg bw/day) or EFSA TDI (0.3 μg/kg bw/day). Notably, the present exposure level to perchlorate through food intake is mainly calculated on the basis of the analyzed concentrations in food items, which may arouse uncertainty in risk assessment without considering the bioavailability (defined as the fraction of an ingested contaminant that reaches the systemic circulation from the gastrointestinal tract).…”
