Occurrence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in sheep from farms located in northern Parana, Brazil

Abstract: The protozoan Neospora caninum is the cause of reproductive diseases in some species of domestic animals that results in severe economic losses to livestock production. These diseases might be transmitted by infected females to their offspring or from oocysts eliminated within the feces of the definitive hosts. The objective of this study was to determine the occurrence of serum antibodies of N. caninum in sheep maintained on farms located in northern Paraná, Brazil. Serum samples were obtained from 381 sheep … Show more

“…Some studies in Brazil have reported low percentages of seropositive sheep with titers ≥ 50, as 8.1% (SALABERRY et al, 2010) in Minas Gerais, 9.2% (FIGLIUOLO et al, 2004) and 13.9% (MUNHÓZ et al, 2010) in São Paulo and 9.5% (ROMANELLI et al, 2007) in Paraná. In this study, considering as cut-off the titer of 50, the seropositivity decrease to 37.58% (224/596; 95%CI 33.79-41.45%), but stills remains higher than the other studies cited above.…”

“…The risk factors for this species are not widely known, but some studies have identified a relationship between seropositivity and property size, ingestion of backwater, animal slaughter on the property, viscera exposed to dogs and the presence of reproductive problems (Faria et al, 2010;Machado et al, 2011;Munhóz et al, 2010). Considering the relevance of this disease and the scarcity of epidemiological information in Sergipe, the aim of this study was to identify the main factors related to the frequency of antibodies against N. caninum in a sheep flock from the State of Sergipe.…”
