Occurrence, genetic characterization and antimicrobial resistance ofSalmonellaisolated from chicken meat and giblets

Abstract: SUMMARY This study was undertaken to survey the presence of Salmonella in 200 chicken samples collected from Mansoura, Egypt. Salmonella was detected in 16% (8/50), 28% (14/50), 32% (16/50) and 60% (30/50) of whole chicken carcasses, drumsticks, livers and gizzards, respectively, with an overall prevalence of 34% (68/200) among all samples. One hundred and sixty-six isolates were identified biochemically as Salmonella, and confirmed genetically by PCR, based on the presence of invA and stn genes. The spvC gene… Show more

“…ranged from 0% to 100% was reported in poultry [2,4,5] . The authors emphasize that differences of Salmonella prevalence in chicken meat could be based on the geographical differences, sampling techniques, detection methods, slaughterhouse hygiene and cross-contamination of products [5,6] . Regarding previous studies in Turkey, Salmonella spp.…”

“…Both developed and developing countries are largely affected by foodborne infections. Foodborne diseases not only affect people's health and well-being but also have an economic impact on individuals and the countries 1 while the impact in case of developing countries like Bangladesh is higher. It reduces markedly social and economic productivity of the countries.…”

“…The serotypes Enteritidis and Typhimurium have been reported in other research studies (Abd-Elghany et al, 2015;Suresh et al, 2011;Thakur et al, 2013) as the most common in chickens. This study, however, did not detect any isolates of these serotypes in chicken product or fecal samples.…”
