“…The main objective of the MTX exposure experiment with mussels was to investigate short-term uptake and provide insights on the chronic exposure potential as a part of a broader investigation of ecotoxicological impacts. The toxicological effects of MTX were demonstrated by the increase in dehydrofolate reductase (DHFR) activity in the gonad and correlated with GST activity (Kleinert et al 2021). Given that MTX is known inhibitor of DHFR activity, the observed induction represents an adaptive response of these mussels to maintain folate for purine (DNA) biosynthesis.…”

“…Anticancer drugs or cytostatic pharmaceuticals, as dangerous compounds, cause irreparable damage to the environment because their effective removal has not been possible from wastewater; they are present in high concentrations (up to 2.12 × 10 –4 mg L −1 ) in the aqueous media (Jureczko and Kalka 2020 ). Cytostatic contaminants, due to their mode of action on DNA damage by disturbing the repair activity and inhibiting the de novo synthesis, can endanger the organisms’ health (Kleinert et al 2021 ).…”

“…Exposure to environmental concentrations of 5-fluorouracil and cyclophosphamide pollutants (0.2–123 μg L −1 ) for Lithobates catesbeianus (tadpoles) can generate morphological changes and mutagenic effects in the gastrointestinal tract via formation of binuclei and micronuclei as well as melanocytes development (Araújo et al 2019 ). The toxicity results for 5-fluorouracil and methotrexate to endemic Elliptio complanata (freshwater mussels) at the highest concentration (100 μg L −1 ) for 96 h indicate that methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil with a larger spectrum of effects can increase the dihydrofolate reductase and can decrease the DNA repair activity and lipid peroxidation (Kleinert et al 2021 ).…”
