“…Multiple minor findings were clustered into the subtheme of organisational processes and practices including staffing, resources, culture, bed blocking, administrative tasks and the physical environment. Participants articulated ‘we have certain difficulty in terms of material that is always lacking’ (Passos Souza Amaral et al, 2019, p. 459) and ‘here we have barebones everything, so I think it's just trying to figure out what you have to do and doing it’ (Dekeseredy et al, 2019, p. 12). In relation to staffing, ‘you don't develop staffing matrixes that predict nobody's going to get a lunch’ (Bouchard, 2016, p. 33) and ‘I think it [burnout] happens more often when we're short staffed and then we end up picking up overtime and not really having time off’ (Rozo et al, 2017, p. 264).…”

“…Presenting patients whom staff deemed as requiring non‐urgent care increased the perceived and potentially unnecessary workload for nursing staff. Participants explained: ‘it's work that assists patients who, most of the time, were not supposed to be treated here’ (Passos Souza Amaral et al, 2019, p. 462) or ‘when I was med‐surg like I knew all my patients needed to be there….in the ER, not everybody has a reason to be there’ (Bouchard, 2016, p. 36) The volume of patient presentations was also identified and described as a source of occupational distress. For example, ‘it's on the weekends when you are overwhelmed with numbers’ (Dekeseredy et al, 2019, p. 12).…”

“…The dimensions of the precariousness analyzed affect nursing professionals and also clinical practice in healthcare, since they prevent or limit the care provided to the user as some minimum working conditions are not guaranteed. 20,23 In a previous study 13 carried out in an Emergency Unit of a hospital service in the Northeast of Brazil with nurses and nursing technicians, among the factors which hindered satisfactorily executing their activities were the lack of material and human resources, an excess of daily activities, patient demands, in addition to the inadequate physical conditions of the hospital.…”

[11][12][13] Brazilian Nursing as a professional category is organized into three categories, namely: Nurses, Nursing Technicians and Nursing Assistants; the professional practice of these are standardized and supervised by the Federal Nursing Council (Cofen) and respective Regional Councils (Corens), also known as the Cofen/Corens system. 14 This system is responsible for ensuring the quality of the services provided, being in compliance with the Law 15 which defines the rights and duties of professionals, and above all to guarantee professional protection.…”
