This study attempts to validate a safety performance (SP) measurement model in the cross-cultural setting of a developing country. In addition, it highlights the variations in investigating the relationship between safety climate (SC) factors and SP indicators. The data were collected from forty under-construction multi-storey building projects in Pakistan. Based on the results of exploratory factor analysis, a SP measurement model was hypothesized. It was tested and validated by conducting confirmatory factor analysis on calibration and validation sub-samples respectively. The study confirmed the significant positive impact of SC on safety compliance and safety participation, and negative impact on number of self-reported accidents/injuries. However, number of near-misses could not be retained in the final SP model because it attained a lower standardized path coefficient value. Moreover, instead of safety participation, safety compliance established a stronger impact on SP. The study uncovered safety enforcement and promotion as a novel SC factor, whereas safety rules and work practices was identified as the most neglected factor. The study contributed to the body of knowledge by unveiling the deviations in existing dimensions of SC and SP. The refined model is expected to concisely measure the SP in the Pakistani construction industry, however, caution must be exercised while generalizing the study results to other developing countries.

Due to safety issues in the construction industry, interest in research on occupational safety and health (OSH) regulations remains high. Previous studies indicated that OSH regulations not only affect performance in and of themselves, but also indirectly by increasing awareness of such regulations. Studies also demonstrated that OSH regulation can affect innovation and corporate safety. However, the effect of OSH regulation on innovation remains unclear, as the relationship between the perception of OSH regulation and innovation is not fully understood. This study measures the innovation efficiency of companies in the Korean construction industry using data envelopment analysis (DEA), and investigates the relationship between innovation efficiency and companies’ perceptions of OSH regulations. Results indicate that companies that positively recognize OSH regulations tend to be more innovative than those that do not. This study also validates differences in innovation efficiency depending on the perception of OSH regulations by bootstrap DEA. The results of this study suggest appropriate strategies to promote innovation in the construction industry from the perspectives of both government and practitioners in firms.

This study attempts to unveil and prioritize the factors affecting labor productivity in Pakistani construction industry. A triangulation strategy was adopted, comprised of a comprehensive literature review, data collection through a questionnaire survey from contractors, clients and consultants, and Delphi survey. Fortyone labor productivity factors, shortlisted through literature review, were ranked by 315 respondents based on their past experience. The relative importance index was calculated to determine the weightage of each factor. To validate the results, top fifteen factors were further analyzed using a three-round Delphi survey. The most significant labor productivity factors are identified as: shortage of skilled labor, payment delay by owner to contractor, unrealistic scheduling and expectation of labors performance, clarity of technical specification, and delay in wages payment to labor. Shortage of skilled labor remained on top in both the ranking techniques. The study has underlined certain deviations in the ranking of labor productivity factors, attained through the analysis of questionnaire survey data and Delphi analysis. The study's results are envisaged to improve the labor productivity of building projects in Pakistan in terms of the project completion time and cost. The study's findings can be generalized with care in other developing countries having similar work environment.
