Nursing students are increasingly undertaking paid term-time employment to finance their living expenses and studies. The objectives of this study are to estimate its prevalence, factors associated, and possible health hazards. A cross-sectional study was conducted of nursing students using a questionnaire that included sociodemographic and employment data, reasons for working, possible health hazards in the workplace, and perceived effects on academic performance. The prevalence of student paid employment was found to be 23.3%. Being male and belonging to a low social class were independently associated with the likelihood of working while studying. Financial support was the main reason for student employment. Workplace hazards included noise, temperature extremes and psychosocial stressors. Sleep disorders were the most frequent health effects followed by musculoskeletal complaints. Nursing students are at risk from many deleterious health effects which are not covered by occupational health and safety programmes.

Depression and Anxiety Disorders among Hospitalized Women with Breast Cancer

PurposeTo document the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders, and their associations with mortality among hospitalized breast cancer patients.MethodsWe examined the associations between breast cancer diagnosis and the diagnoses of anxiety or depression among 4,164 hospitalized breast cancer cases matched with 4,164 non-breast cancer controls using 2006-2009 inpatient data obtained from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database. Conditional logistic regression models were used to compute odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the associations between breast cancer diagnosis and diagnoses of anxiety or depression. We also used binary logistic regression models to examine the association between diagnoses of depression or anxiety, and in-hospital mortality among breast cancer patients.ResultsWe observed that breast cancer cases were less likely to have a diagnosis of depression (OR=0.63, 95% CI: 0.52-0.77), and less likely to have a diagnosis of anxiety (OR=0.68, 95% CI: 0.52-0.90) compared with controls. This association remained after controlling for race/ethnicity, residential income, insurance and residential region. Breast cancer patients with a depression diagnosis also had lower mortality (OR=0.69, 95% CI: 0.52-0.89) compared with those without a depression diagnosis, but there was no significant difference in mortality among those with and without anxiety diagnoses.ConclusionDiagnoses of depression and anxiety in breast cancer patients were less prevalent than expected based on our analysis of hospitalized breast cancer patients and matched non-breast cancer controls identified in the NIS dataset using ICD-9 diagnostic codes. Results suggest that under-diagnosis of mental health problems may be common among hospitalized women with a primary diagnosis of breast cancer. Future work may fruitfully explore reasons for, and consequences of, inappropriate identification of the mental health needs of breast cancer patients.

ABTRACT Psychosocial aspects refer to elements of the organizational environment that are influenced individual differences to be experienced by workers, are related to macro historical, social context of each person. Stress is a key element related to psychosocial aspects. The study aimed to analyze the prevalence of BS, according to the psychosocial, socio-demographic and organization of intensive care nursing. Sectional study of 130 professionals, applying selfadministered questionnaire containing: a short version of the Job Stress Scale-for measuring stress; Maslach Burnout Inventory-to measure burnout syndrome; and Self Reporting Questionnaire-to measure common mental disorders. Univariate and bivariate analyzes were performed, according to Karasek model, with 5% significance level. In the first article, was identified that burnout is related to organizational factors, personal, individual and inherent to the profession. The repercussions involve the physical spheres, psychological, emotional, organizational and family. In the second article, it talked-about the size of stress where: 30.8% were in high demand; 24.6% in active work; 20.8% in passive job and 23.8% in low demand. Social support revealed that 53.1% of workers were below the median, those in active work were above this value (p = 0.027)...
