Occlusal Changes from Primary to Permanent Dentitions

Abstract: A longitudinal study was undertaken to assess the persistance of occlusal features of the primary dentition at five years into the permanent dentition at 12 years. It was found that although there was a broad measure of predictability there was variation in detail which made forecasting unreliable in the individual patient. Generally speaking, incisal overjet and overbite changed very little between the two dentitions, but those changes which occurred were in both directions, and the direction of change could … Show more

“…According to Bishara et al, 1 an understanding of the anteroposterior changes that occur in the occlusion between the deciduous and permanent dentition is crucial for the clinician involved in early orthodontic treatment. While there are studies from other parts of the globe in relation to growth and development of the occlusion, [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29] there is no such report so far from Nigeria.…”

“…Diastema in the upper jaw (midline diastema), because of pernicious habits and/or familial tendencies, shows more prevalence over diastema in the lower jaw. Compared to midline diastema (1), mandibular diastema is not as marked and as a growth characteristic occurs less frequently, but the consequences are quite dramatic (2,3). According to a research by Attia (4) the primary etiologic factor in mandibular diastemas is tongue thrust in a low rest position.…”
