Agro-industrial by-products and by-products from the wine industry (pomace, peels, leaves, stems, and seeds) represent a potential economic interest because they are usually relevant natural sources of bioactive compounds, which may present significant biological activities related to human health and well-being. This article aims to review wine and winery industry by-products as potential natural sources of antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antiaging, and anticancer compounds, as well as briefly highlighting the extraction methods used to obtain these bioactive compounds and explore their potential applications in the food, cosmetic, and packaging industries. Although there are some studies of wine industry by-products with different origins, this revision will be mainly focused on the Portuguese vineyard industry since it represents an import industrial sector as proof of the diversity of the bioactive compounds identified. Therefore, the recovery of these bioactive molecules that act as antioxidants and health-promoting agents may promote a variety of industries at the same time as the circular economy.

O milho (Zea mays L.) é uma das culturas mais produzidas em todo o mundo, sendo importante na alimentação humana e animal.Entretanto, diversas pragas agrícolas são responsáveis pela redução da produção. Esta pesquisa foi realizada com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência do extrato aquoso de nim (Azadirachta indica) no controle da lagarta-do-cartucho (Spodopterafrugiperda) e do óleo de pequi (Caryocar brasiliense) sobre fungos em sementes de milho.No primeiro experimento, realizado em campo, foram empregados cinco tratamentos, com três repetições, sendo:tratamento (T1) testemunha, foi utilizada apenas a água da irrigação e nos demais, utilizou-se extrato aquoso de nim nas seguintes concentrações 5%, 10%, 15% e 20% representados por T2; T3; T4 e T5 respectivamente. Os números de lagartas, ataques e os números de posturas eram avaliados 24hs após as pulverizações. No segundo experimento, avaliou-se a incidência de fungos e germinação das sementes do milho tratadas com o óleo essencial de pequi. Os testes de sanidade e germinação consistiram em dez tratamentos, sendo estes: T1: Testemunha (sementes não tratadas); T2:Fungicida Dicarboximida (240g/100 kg); T3: óleo essencial de pequi 0,5%; T4: 1,0% (OEP); T5: 1,5% (OEP); T6: 2,0% (OEP); T7: 4,0% (OEP); T8: 6,0% (OEP); T9: 8,0% (OEP) e T10: 10% (OEP).Os dados do experimento em campo foram submetidos às análises de variância e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. Para os testes de sanidade e germinação foi utilizado o teste de Scott-Knott a 1% de probabilidade. Em relação a eficiência do extrato aquoso de nim, constatou-se todos os tratamentos não apresentaram diferença significativa no controle da lagarta-do-cartucho. No entanto, os resultados obtidos no comprimento de parte aérea da plântula, não houve significância, mas o tratamento com a concentração de (O.E.P 2,0%) proporcionou o aumento significativo do comprimento da raiz com o valor de 10,5 cm. Para o teste de sanidade,o óleo essencial de pequi em suas diferentes concentrações demonstrou eficiência no controle dos fungos do gênero Penicillium sp e Rhizopus sp. E os tratamentos T7 (O.E.P 4,0%) e T8 (O.E.P 6,0%) não obtiveram eficácia.

The objective of this study was to use supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) to extract phenolic compounds from indigenous Brazilian plants with high economic potential. The plants studied were: Flame wine (Pyrostegia venusta), Dog´s knot (Heteropteris aphrodisiaca O. Mach), Ice-cream bean tree (Inga edulis), Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril var. stilbocarpa) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Global yields experiments (X 0,S/F=50 ) using pure CO 2 , CO 2 + ethanol (10 %, mass) and CO 2 + water (10 %, mass) as solvents were performed 35 MPa and 323 K; the ratio of the CO 2 mass to feed mass was maintained constant (50 kg/kg). The extracts were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Their antioxidant activity, total polyphenolic and flavonoids content were also determined. After evaluating the behavior of the yield and chemical composition of the extracts, it was observed that the solvent mixture CO 2 + H 2 O provided higher yield, especially for jatobá. Additionally, this extract presented high antioxidant activity. Based on these results, global yields isotherms (GYI) of jatoba were determined at temperature of 323 and 333 K and pressures of 15, 25 and 35 MPa in order to select the optimum operational conditions. Due to the higher polyphenols and tannins content, the optimum conditions selected were 15 MPa and 323 K. Overall extraction curves (OEC's) were obtained under these conditions in order to determine the kinetic parameters by fitting the OECs to a linear spline with three straight lines. For the scale-up study, the criterion adopted was keeping constant the solvent to feed ratio (S/F) and process time. The chemical analyses of SFE extracts were performed by Ultra performance liquid chromatography -diode array detection (UPLC-MS/MS) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). According to the results, the extracts showed chemical profile xvi of procyanidins. Finally, it was evaluated the cost of manufacturing (COM) of the extracts for all five plants obtained in the GYI experiment (X 0, S/F=50 ) for the three solvent: CO 2 pure, CO 2 + ethanol (10 %, mass) e CO 2 + water (10 %, mass); and for the jatobá extract obtained at optimized process conditions using CO 2 + water (10 %, mass). The estimated COM demonstrated the feasibility of the SFE process for industrial scale extractors of 50 and 500 L, depending on the raw material to be processed. Moreover, according to the estimated COM, obtaining jatobá bark extracts rich in tannins was economically feasible with CO 2 + H 2 O. Jatoba extracts were also obtained using ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE). The extractions were performed at the potency of 20 and 60 W during 40 min, using water at S/F ratio of 20 (optimized in a maceration extraction assay). High content of polyphenols were obtained using the potency of 60 W. The efficiency of UAE in extracting polyphenols was evaluated using crosscurrent extraction in three stages.
