Obtaining corundum-zircon suspensions, their rheological and bonding properties

Abstract: Materials in the AI203--ZrSiO, system, as research has shown [1][2][3], are of great interest in view of their high thermal-shock resistance and strength, including performance at elevated temperatures [4].Two methods are known for obtaining suspensions of mixed composition in the AI203--ZrSi04 system: staged suspension and mixing of suspensions. Using both methods, the starting materials consist of powders, dry milled in metal mills, followed by washing to remove tramp iron in hydrochloric acid [5]. In obtain… Show more

“…In the ZrO suspensions of the type being examined we note the oxide-acid mechanism of setting, which previously was noted on the suspensions of corundum [12] and corundum-zirconium [16]. Despite the fact that the porosity of the casting based on suspensions ~cast of these two powders are quite different, the values for ~bend are close.…”

“…During the curing process, the pH of the suspension increases because of the interaction between the solid and the liquid phases. Such phenomena have been previously established and explained in the case of corundum suspensions [18].…”

“…In previous work [5][6][7] the researchers used compositions containing up to 80%* AI20 ~ and up to 20% zircon, and they also used other methods of shaping, such as monoaxial pressing and water slip casting, followed by firing at 1500-1600~…”

“…Thus, the authors of [7] owing to the *Here and subsequently mass parts are stated. The aim of the present investigation was to make a comparative analysis of the methods of shaping (slip casting and hydrostatic pressing) from the point of view of green porosity, attained through this, and their influence on the processes of solid-phase reaction and densification of the material during sintering, and also on the structure and mechanical properties of the ceramic.…”
