Observations on PAH, PCB, and PCDD/F Trends in U.K. Urban Air, 1991−1995

Abstract: Ambient air concentrations at London and Manchester are reported for PCBs, PAHs, and PCDD/Fs from 1991 to 1995. This data set suggests that urban PAH concentrations are trending downward in the U.K. ∑PCB concentrations (∑ = congeners 28, 52, 101, 118, 138, 153, and 180) were usually ∼0.2−2 ng m-3 over the study period, with concentrations of the seven PCB congeners (∑PCB) in London generally 2−3 times higher than in Manchester. PCB concentrations have remained quite stable year-on-year over the study period. P… Show more

“…For waste incineration, the most relevant concentration occurs in the fly ashes (as high as 858 ng I-TEQ/kg), which makes fundamental the installation of proper abatement and disposal technologies for the dust fraction (Lin et al, 2010; (Shin et al, 2011;Katsoyiannis et al, 2010;Abad et al, 2007;Zheng et al, 2008;Coleman et al, 1997;UNEP, 2015). “…In various concentrations, they have been detected not only in polluted industrial and urbanized areas, but also in soil, water sediments and derivative rocks in environments of different anthropogenic pressure (Coleman et al, 1997;Malawska et al, 2006). Although a vast majority of PAHs is introduced into the environment from anthropogenic sources (Harvey, 1998;Howsam & Jones, 1998) also a relatively small amount of these compounds derive from natural sources (Simoneit, 1998;Wilcke, 2000;Wilcke et al, 2000;.…”

“…Emissions of fossil fuel combustion (FFC) and urban air particulate material (APM) are complex systems. The organic fraction of particulate matter from FFC and APM contains hundreds of organic constituents and is thought to contain the components of most environmental significance, including a variety of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dioxins (Wornat et al, 2001;Coleman et al, 1997). Motor vehicle exhaust has been found to be mutagenic in the Ames assay (Courtois et al, 1993;Song and Ye, 1995) and to cause lung tumors in rats chronically exposed to diesel exhaust (Muto et al, 1996) by a mechanism which may involve DNA adduct formation (Gallagher et al, 1993).…”
