Observations of structured optical emissions and particle precipitation equatorward of the traditional auroral oval

Abstract: [1] High-sensitivity all-sky images from south-central Alaska show the common occurrence of slow-moving, faint optical emissions at 557.7 and 427.8 nm well equatorward of the discrete aurora. These emissions appear over a continuum of forms ranging from homogenous longitudinal bands to bands with irregular structure on their poleward edge to widely distributed arrays of vortex-like curls and widely spaced spots on the order of 10 km in diameter. These forms appear to correspond to various stages in the tempora… Show more

“…[, ]. It was also reported that diffuse aurora appears with a variety of spatial scale structures ∼30 km in width [ Wallis et al , ] and ∼10 km in width [ Pedersen et al , ]. Simultaneous ground‐based optical instruments and Fast Auroral Snapshot Explorer observation demonstrated thin auroral stripes extending along the geomagnetic latitudinal directions with a width of about 5 km in dim background luminosity [ Sergienko et al , ].…”

“…Many cases of fine‐scale structures in discrete auroras were demonstrated by both spacecraft investigations and ground‐based observations, such as Alfvenic auroras [ Semeter et al , 2008; Frey et al , 2010] and flickering auroras [ Gustavsson et al , 2008; Whiter et al , 2008, 2010; Yaegashi et al , 2011; Kataoka et al , 2011]. While diffuse auroras have been generally regarded as uniform and not discrete structures, fine scale structures were also reported [e.g., Wallis et al , 1979; Pedersen et al , 2007]. Simultaneous optical instruments on the ground and the FAST electron spectrometer found thin auroral stripes extended along the geomagnetic latitudinal directions with a width of about 5 km in dim background luminosity [ Sergienko et al , 2008].…”
