“…2d), the massive Mg 17 Al 12 phase was refined, but some net-shaped Mg 17 Al 12 phase still can be detected. The Mg 2 Si phases in the Mg-12Al-0.7Si-0.09Sr alloy became extraordinarily fine, and their morphology changed from initial Chinese script-shape to granular and/or irregular polygonal shapes, indicating that adding 0.09wt.% Sr can effectively modify and refine the Chinese script-shaped Mg 2 Si phase, which is consistent with the results of Yang Ming-bo et al [15] and Srinivasan et al [16] . However, no new phase was found in the alloy according to the above information from the XRD and EDS results ( Fig.…”

“…Hence, the key point is to modify the coarse Chinese script shape Mg 2 Si phase in Mg-Al-Si alloys. Recent research [14][15][16] has indicated that Sr and Sb can assist in refining and modifying the Mg 2 Si phase of magnesium alloys. But some disagreement regarding the Sb modification still exists.…”

“…Therefore, other micro-alloying elements such as Sr need to be considered in order to further improve the mechanical properties and castability of the ZA84 alloy. It has been reported that minor Sr can effectively refine the microstructures of the AZ (Mg-Al-Zn) and ZK (Mg-Zn-Zr) system alloys, thus leading to improve the mechanical properties (Ref [6][7][8][9][10][11]. However, the investigation about the effect of Sr addition on the ZA (Mg-Zn-Al) system alloys is very scarce in the literature.…”

“…It is well known that the grain refinement is an important method of elevating property and improving formability for magnesium alloys, and recent research results indicated that Sr additions such as Al-Sr master alloys which have been widely used in industrial practice especially for the modification of Al-Si alloys, were thought as to be a potential effective addition of grain refinement for Mg-Al series alloys [5][6][7]. For example, Srinivasan et al and Nam et al [8,9] reported the addition of Al-10Sr master alloy to a Si-containing AZ91-Mg alloy appeared to refine the microstructure, and similar results were obtained in AM50-Mg alloy and AZ91-Mg alloy by Zhao et al and Hirai et al,respectively [10,11]. In addition, Zeng et al and Chen et al [12,13], respectively, reported that adding pure Sr or Al-10Sr alloy to AZ31-Mg alloy effectively reduced its grain size, and similar results were reported by other researchers [5,6].…”
