In the IlJ -k plane there is a substantial angle between the IlJ axis and the phonon dispersion relation. The intersection of the phonon and spin wave dispersion occurs at a wave vector for which a large part of the spin wave energy is due to exchange. It is for this reason that sound is particularly appropriate for measurement of exchange energy.
