Objectively Measured Physical Activity in Sixth-Grade Girls

Abstract: When physical activity is measured objectively and a 4.6-metabolic equivalents cut point for moderate to vigorous physical activity is used, most sixth-grade girls do not meet guidelines for adequate physical activity. One notable finding was the effect of different accelerometer scoring protocols on estimates of compliance. Conceptual and empirical work is needed to define appropriate physical activity for youth using objective physical activity measures.

“…Those in the lowest quartile of 25(OH)D concentrations had lower dietary fiber intake and a trend toward less milk and calcium intake. There was a higher proportion, though a nonsignificant trend, of youth meeting guidelines for steps/day (Vincent et al, 2003) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (Pate et al, 2006) in the three highest season-specific quartiles of 25(OH)D.…”

“…Levels of vitamin D in fortified milk would have to be considerably Recommendations are 11 000 steps/day for girls and 12 000 steps/day for boys (Vincent, et al, 2003). b Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity guidelines are greater than 60 min/day for youth of both sexes (Pate et al, 2006). Youth in the lowest season-specific quartile of vitamin D levels had similar diets as youth in the upper quartiles with the exception of dietary fiber.…”

“…Using a similar definition as adopted in the Norwegian youth, Owen et al (46) suggested that 76% and 53% of 9-10 year old boys and girls, from a multi-ethnic district in England, met the recommended levels of physical activity. Whereas Pate et al (43) suggested that no more than 11.8% of 12 year old girls from the US were active according to the recommendations for public health. It appears that boys are more physical active than girls (39,40,42,(44)(45)(46)(47), and that activity level declines with age (39)(40)(41)(42)47), also confirmed in longitudinal analysis (39,41).…”

“…Longitudinal analysis showed that activity level declined from 9 to 15 years (39). Due to various definitions of MVPA when assessed objectively, the prevalence of sufficiently active children and youth (6 to 15 years) varies from 99.6% to 0.4% in comparable studies (40)(41)(42)(43)(44)(45)(46). Using a similar definition as adopted in the Norwegian youth, Owen et al (46) suggested that 76% and 53% of 9-10 year old boys and girls, from a multi-ethnic district in England, met the recommended levels of physical activity.…”

“…The current study differs from other studies by the time period and context during which ST was examined. While others focused on comparing ST in childhood to adolescence, 5,[25][26][27] or adolescence to adulthood, 5 this study examined potential longitudinal changes in ST from younger to older adolescence (i.e., ages 14/15 to 18/19) in the context of a province-wide PE policy. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage in the life course for physical and cognitive growth, as well as a transitional period characterized by a growing role in adopting lifestyle practices that may track into adulthood and remain stable throughout life.…”
