Objective Evaluation of Functionality of Filtering Bleb Based on Polarization-Sensitive Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract: The fibrosis score showed a high ability to discriminate nonfunctional from functional blebs. Polarization-sensitive OCT is a noninvasive technique that provides not only the fibrosis score but also standard structural tomography. It can be a comprehensive tool for longitudinal evaluation after filtration surgery for glaucoma.

“…Although the current study assessed only phase retardation, the local birefringence is another emerging readout of PS-OCT. Local birefringence measurements of blebs using PS-OCT were recently introduced. [28][29][30] Because the phase retardation does not accurately provide the depth-localized polarization property of the bleb, local birefringence analysis provides more accurate localization of the birefringence change than does phase retardation analysis and shows the precise location of scar tissue. 22,31 Postoperative surgical manipulation against the trabeculectomy bleb has become a recognized factor for increasing surgical success.…”

“…9,22 As alterations in corneal microstructure can lead to changes of the birefringent characteristics, PS-OCT was also proposed for imaging such changes during corneal crosslinking therapy. 12,23 Following trabeculectomy-a surgical procedure for intraocular pressure (IOP) relieve in glaucoma patients-the evolution of filtering blebs was monitored by PS-OCT. 12,[24][25][26][27] Finally, PS-OCT was also used to investigate birefringence characteristics of the sclera. 13 For advancing our knowledge and understanding of eye development, its physiology in health and disease, and for the development of new therapeutics, rodent models have been playing an essential role.…”

“…The tissue classification framework discussed in the previous section is a general framework and it could be customized to several types of JM-OCT images, such as anterior eye [29,30], posterior eye [11,41,42], heart [43], and skin [44]. In this study, we specialized the algorithm for the classification of lamina cribrosa and its surrounding tissues in the ONH region.…”

“…In addition to the biomechanical assessment capability of JM-OCT, the multiple contrasts of JM-OCT enable robust methods for tissue delineation and classification. JM-OCT has been shown to be successful in, for example, anterior eye segment tissue discrimination [21], retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) segmentation [22][23][24][25], choroid and scleral segmentation [24][25][26][27], multi-contrast based superpixel-based segmentation [28], and fibrotic tissue segmentation in bleb evaluation [29,30]. Additionally, further signal processing methods to enhance the segmentation capability of JM-OCT, such as superpixels [28], were demonstrated.…”
