Abstract: The results of this study show that the erythema meter and the infrared thermometer are effective tools to objectively measure mild inflammation post-HA injection.

“…29 However, filler agents can occasionally elicit a more severe chronic inflammatory response within the subcuta- neous tissues that can present with swelling. This complication is mainly encountered with long-term and permanent fillers, such as silicone, and is predisposed by underlying inflammatory diseases, such allergies, as well as regional infectious processes, such as dental caries and sinusitis.…”

“…17,18 Since the chemical structure of animal or nonanimal-derived HA is identical to that in humans, it should be the ideal biomaterial provoking no reaction. 4,5,19 However, short term acute but transient inflammatory reactions are common, 20,21 while rare longterm adverse events may correlate with subclinical chronic inflammation. 6,22 The cause of observed inflammatory reactions has been a matter of debate.…”

“…Possibilities range from the unavoidable trauma of tissue during injection or from poor implantation surgical technique to contamination from impurities such as bacterial endotoxin and foreign proteins or DNA. 20,21,23 As endotoxin contamination and protein content have been reduced, inflammatory reactions in patients have decreased in incidence but have not been eliminated. 4,5 Concern has focused on low molecular weight (LMW) components or degradation fragments from implanted HA-containing devices to account for observed inflammatory reactions.…”

“…Hyaluronic acid is most commonly used, but other agents include collagen, silicone, and polytetrafluoroethylene. The CT and MRI appearance of these agents vary, but a transient inflammatory reaction is common, with occasional occurrences of a severe chronic inflammatory response with diffuse swelling and enhancement of the orofacial soft tissues ( 13 , 14 ). Knowledge of the appropriate clinical history is necessary to avoid this potential pitfall.…”
