Object detection for military surveillance using distributed multimodal smart sensors

Abstract: This paper considers an autonomous ground Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) system comprising of multiple distributed, wirelessly communicating smart sensors. The ISR system, in turn, is a part of a larger System of Systems (SoS) consisting of aerial, manned, etc. surveillance systems and information collection centers. The smart sensors of the ISR system perform environment monitoring using different modalities and exchange object detection and identification results to assess the situation … Show more

“…Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been widely used in many fields, such as agriculture, monitoring, and geographical routing [1,2,3,4]. The nodes of wireless sensor networks can share the effective information with each other, and transmit the information to the remote monitoring hosts.…”

“…Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) play an increasingly important role in battlefield surveillance, environmental monitoring and health monitoring due to the low-power, low-cost, distributed and self-organizing characteristics [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. With the increasing quantity and quality of the demand, e.g., road traffic control, smart home and emergency rescue, Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) draw much attention.…”

“…Since the sensing information must be transmitted to the remote monitoring hosts, the fundamental communication problems are important to WSNs [ 2 ]. However, the related researches have mainly focused on the terrestrial WSNs, which may be challenged by the operating environment, such as forest, wilderness and military environments [ 3 , 4 ]. With the obvious superiority in providing large coverage areas at low cost and supporting fixed and mobile services with various connecting modes, satellite systems have been widely utilized for wireless communications services to worldwide users, especially in the remote and underpopulated areas where terrestrial networks are economically and/or operationally infeasible [ 5 , 6 ].…”
