RESUMOObjetivo: analisar a associação entre o nível socioeconômico e o consumo alimentar de crianças com idade escolar matriculadas na rede pública de ensino. Método: fizeram parte deste estudo descritivo 82 crianças de 5 a 7 anos, de escolas municipais da cidade de Maringá, Paraná. Foi aplicado aos pais um questionário socioeconômico e de consumo alimentar. Para a classificação socioeconômicas das famílias foi utilizado o questioná-rio da associação brasileira de estudos populacionais e para a o consumo alimentar, o marcador de consumo do sistema de vigilância alimentar nutricional. Para a análise dos dados, foi utilizado o teste exato de Fisher (p<0,05). Resultados: não foi encontrada associação significativa (p>0,05) entre o consumo de alimentos saudáveis e não saudáveis e o nível socioeconômico. Verificou-se que 75,7% (34) das crianças das classes AB e 72,9% (27) das classes CD consomem alimentos saudáveis mais de três vezes na semana. Em relação aos alimentos não saudáveis, nota-se que as crianças da classe AB, 77,7% (35) comem até três vezes na semana, enquanto 64,71% (22) das crianças das classes CD comem acima de três vezes na semana. Conclusão: nesse estudo não ficou evidenciado a diferença de consumo alimentar entre crianças da classe socioeconômi-ca AB quando comparado com CD. Entretanto, houve tendência às crianças da classe CD ingerirem alimentos não saudáveis em um número maior de dias, quando comparados com o AB, sem diferença significativa. Palavras-chave:

Abstract. Overweight and obesity are two related health issues of epidemic proportions. In Nigeria, these health conditions have been emerging only recently. The extant literature shows inter-city variations in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Nigeria. However, they say little about intra-city variations of these health problems in Nigerian urban centres. Thus, the focus of the study was to determine the small-area variations in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in an urban area of Nigeria and its association with socio-economic, environmental, dietary and lifestyle risk factors. With the aid of a questionnaire, information on the demographic, socio-economic, lifestyle, household and neighbourhood characteristics of respondents was obtained from respondents. Overweight and obesity were computed based on the self-reported height and weight of respondents, using the Body Mass Index (BMI) formula. A simple linear regression model was estimated to determine the individual and collective effects of risk factors. Findings showed that there were noticeable spatial variations in the prevalence of overweight and obesity which result from the varying contextual and compositional characteristics among the political wards of the Ibadan North LGA. Physical proximity to fast food outlets was the only significant factor driving the spatial pattern of obesity (b = 0.645; R 2 = 0.416). The paper suggests that government and health officials should formulate area-specific obesity prevention and control plans to curb this growing epidemic in Nigeria.

Objective: To analyze excessive weight (EW) in young adult students from socio-demographic markers of the individual dimension of vulnerability. Methods: Analytical study, conducted with 560 young adults from 26 schools of a Brazilian northeastern municipality. The questionnaire used for data collection contained EW and sociodemographic variables, analyzed by descriptive measures of association and logistic regression by the method enter for model adjustment.Results: A higher proportion of excessive weight was identified in young people who: were 23-24 years of age, women, skin color other than white, religious, with a partner, with children, without an occupation, with individual and family income more than two minimum wages. The excessive weight was associated with marital status and children, which remained in the final model. Conclusion: Having a companion and children makes young adults vulnerable to EW. However, this condition is multi-determined and should be understood in a larger context. ResumoObjetivo: Analisar o excesso ponderal (EP) em adultos jovens escolares a partir dos marcadores sociodemográficos da dimensão individual da vulnerabilidade. Métodos: Estudo analítico, realizado com 560 adultos jovens de 26 escolas de um município nordestino brasileiro. O questionário aplicado para coleta de dados continha a variável EP e as sociodemográficas, analisadas por medidas descritivas, de associação e regressão logística pelo método enter para ajuste do modelo. Resultados: Houve maior proporção de excesso ponderal nos jovens de 23 a 24 anos de idade, mulheres, de cor/raça diferente da branca, com religião, com companheiros, com filhos, sem ocupação, com renda individual e familiar maior que dois salários mínimos. O excesso ponderal apresentou associação com situação conjugal e filhos, que permaneceram no modelo final. Conclusão: Ter companheiro e filhos torna o adulto jovem vulnerável ao EP. No entanto, ratifica-se que o agravo em questão é multideterminado e deve ser compreendido num contexto ampliado.
