Obesity is Independently Associated With Worse Patient‐Reported Outcomes in Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

“…Corticosteroids remain the first choice of treatment for SLE, but their administration is linked to excess weight gain and the development of corticosteroid-induced diabetes. Obesity was detected as an independent risk factor in worsening the functional capacity, fatigue, and inflammation status of patients with SLE ( 20 , 22 24 ).…”

“…For symptom experience, we focused on the most frequent and distressing symptoms (pain, fatigue, and depression), rather than all potential symptoms, so as to keep the hypothetical model concise with adequate yet minimal numbers of symptoms. Disease activity and obesity were included as antecedents of symptom experience because they have been shown to influence RA symptoms, particularly pain, fatigue, and depression, significantly (Katz et al, ; Patterson, Schmajuk, Jafri, Wysham, & Katz, ). In terms of the outcomes of symptom experience, quality of life was included as the outcome of the synergistic effects of symptom clusters because RA is primarily a quality‐of‐life issue.…”

“…[11][12][13][14] Also, obesity has been associated with increased fatigue both in the general population and SLE. 15 A full clinical examination of the heart, lung, thyroid and nervous system 16 is crucial. For women, a gynaecological examination is also recommended, especially in case of anaemia.…”
