Objective: To analyze the influence of changes in function/cognition and the presence of depression in institutionalized elderly who have suffered falls, in order to prevent these accidents. Methods: Quantitative exploratory and descriptive research, conducted with 30 elderly individuals in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), using five data collection instruments. The analysis was conducted using SPSS 13.0. Results: We found that: the majority were women; had low levels of education; the risk of falls increased with age; older people with less time in an institution had fallen more. We identified the influence of medication use on falls. In relation to functional capacity, the elderly who had fallen, had independence for activities of daily living; of 20 elderly with scores suggestive of cognitive impairment, ten suffered falls. There was no significant influence between depression and falls in our investigation. Conclusion: Results show the importance of determining the influence of functional / cognitive changes and the presence of depression, and in episodes of falls in institutionalized elderly. Métodos: Pesquisa quantitativa, exploratória e descritiva, realizada com 30 idosos, no Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil). sendo usados cinco instrumentos de coleta de dados. A análise deu-se pelo Programa SPSS 13.0. Resultados: Verificou-se que: a maioria era mulher; baixa escolaridade; o risco de quedas aumentou com a idade; idosos com menor tempo de institucionalização caíram mais. Identificou-se a influência do uso de medicamentos e quedas. Em relação à capacidade funcional, os idosos que caíram, apresentaram independência para as atividades de vida diária; dos 20 idosos com escore sugestivo para deficit cognitivo, dez sofreram quedas. Não houve influência significativa entre depressão e quedas nos investigados. Conclusão: Verificou-se a importância de determinar-se a influência de alterações funcionais/cognitivas e a presença de depressão, em episódios de quedas nos idosos institucionalizados. RESUMOPesquisa qualitativa, fundamentada na Teoria das Representações Sociais, que objetivou apreender as representações sociais de adolescentes de uma escola pública e de uma privada sobre velhice e comparando-as entre esses dois grupos. Participaram 60 adolescentes, 30 de escola particular e 30 de escola pública, que responderam a entrevistas semiestruturadas no período de maio a junho de 2012. Os dados coletados foram submetidos às técnicas de análise de conteúdo com elaboração de três categorias, a saber: representações sobre a velhice, o tratamento dado ao idoso, e o reconhecimento de si como sujeito em processo de envelhecimento. As representações sociais dos adolescentes evidenciaram aspectos negativos e positivos em relação à velhice, marcados pela infl uência de aspectos socioculturais. ABSTRACTQualitative research, based on the Theory of Social Representations, which aimed to apprehend the social representations of teenagers in a public school and a private on ageing, and to compare them between these two groups. Las representaciones sociales de los adolescentes evidenciaron aspectos negativos y positivos en relación con la vejez, marcados por la infl uencia de los aspectos socio-culturales.

The present study aimed to investigate the perception of elderly professional actors regarding aging, old age and the meaning of being a grandfather or grandmother. An exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional study was performed. An open interview with a semi-structured script was used, and the data was analyzed with the Bardin technique. The discourse of the elderly actors revealed an unfavorable view of aging and the denial of this process in their personal lives. From an artistic perspective, however, the respondents had a favorable image of old age and youthfulness, highlighting the favorable influence of the profession on their own aging and old age. Most showed a favorable perception of the meaning of being a grandmother or grandfather in family life, and had a neutral stance on the interpretation of this role in the professional field. It can be concluded that the profession of acting influenced discussions on the various aspects of aging and that the skills of the actor's craft encouraged elderly actors to tend to deny their old age and to have an unfavorable view of aging.
