Context. The growing demand for global food security has resulted in rising fishing intensity, sometimes leading to overexploitation of fish resources, including tuna. Increasingly, fishers are using anchored fish aggregating devices (aFADs) to improve efficiencies and reduce costs. Aims. To identify locations and use patterns of FADs and characterise aFAD usage in Indonesia and beyond. Methods. We identified general patterns of aFAD usage by tuna purse-seine, pole and line, hand-line and troll-line vessels operating in Indonesian waters through reviewing relevant literature and focal-group discussions. Key results. aFADs usage can be characterised by gear type and fishing strategy; vessel behaviour; equipment and spare parts for aFADs installation; association with light; trip duration, catch per unit effort (CPUE), ratio of live bait to catch, fuel consumption; existence of aFAD floats on board vessels and by-catch composition. Conclusions. aFAD usage has been widely adopted by both industrial and small-scale tuna fishers to efficiency. However, this efficiency comes at the cost of significant increases in catches of juveniles and non-target species, which raises sustainability concerns for Indonesian officials. Implications. Ultimately, quantifying the numbers, types and locations of aFADs is key to fisheries management to avoid overfishing, overcrowding and limit by-catch and fishing-associated waste.

Informasi tentang kondisi perikanan tuna skala kecil di beberapa lokasi di Maluku, termasuk di Buru Utara adalah sangat terbatas sehingga perlu untuk dieksplorasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kondisi armada penangkapan, komposisi ukuran hasil tangkapan, CPUE, dan musim penangkapan. Pengumpulan data dilakukan pada bulan Juli sampai September 2019. Data yang dikumpulkan meliputi jumlah armada penangkapan, hasil tangkapan, posisi daerah penangkapan ikan, dan panjang berat ikan. Data sekunder diperoleh dari Yayasan MDPI berupa data Produksi dan hasil tangkapan 5 tahun terakhir di Perairan Buru Utara. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan disajikan dalam bentuk gambar dan grafik histogram. Kapal dikonstruksikan dari bahan FPR dan menggunakan mesin motor tempel 15 PK berbahan bakar bensin. Dimensi rata-rata adalah panjang 8,04 m, lebar 1,29 m, tinggi 0.6 m. Daerah operasi penangkapan tuna diperkirakan 5-30 mil dari pangkalan pendaratan, hasil tangkapan didominasi tuna madidihang (71,86%), dan mempunyai ukuran panjang total berkisar antara 21-160 cm. Rata-rata hasil tangkapan adalah 6.782 kg/unit kapal/tahun atau CPUE 56 kg/unit kapal/trip. Musim penangkapan terjadi pada bulan Januari, Mei, Juli, November dan Desember.

Biodiversitas 23: 5481-5490. An understanding of immersion duration and the characteristics of natural materials Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD) on fish aggregation in the sea is crucial in developing more effective fishing strategies in FAD areas. The aim of the study was to understand the relationship between immersion duration and characteristics of FADs made from natural materials on the schooling aggregation of mackerel scad (Decapterus russelli) in the sea. The research was conducted from April 2021 to March 2022 in Bone Bay, Indonesia. The type of research was experimental fishing 78 times down at sea to observe the relationship between FAD construction and fish schools. The results demonstrated that the growth of invertebrates in the construction component of FADs based on the period of immersion in the sea at the immersion period of >30 days showed a high growth rate of algae, hydrozoa and crustacean species at the bottom of the raft. The endurance of the coconut leaves attractor at a duration of 3-4 weeks was the best condition for immersion duration in the sea because schooling fish were more concentrated around the attractor at an average distance of 1.2 m, while at a duration of 5-6 weeks the attractor had damaged and the fish schooling was less concentrated. Based on the arrival of schooling fish in FAD areas, the fastest average duration was 3-4 weeks, namely in transitional season 1. The presence of crustacean species caused fish schooling only to be concentrated at a distance of 2-3 m at the time of fishing. In the fishing strategy, the treatment of FADs using dried coconut leaves attractors showed more concentrated fish schooling and calmer fish movement pattern compared to the use of fresh coconut leaves attractor. The characteristics of the components making up FADs had a direct impact on the effectiveness of attracting and concentrating fish. In addition, the characteristics also influenced the schooling distance of fish at the center point of the FAD raft before the fishing gear was lowered.
