Nutritional Status of Persons with HIV Infection, Persons with HIV Infection and Tuberculosis, and HIV-Negative Individuals from Southern India

Abstract: We compared the nutritional status of individuals with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection alone, individuals with HIV infection and tuberculosis (after completion of antituberculosis treatment), and HIV-negative individuals and found that malnutrition, anemia, and hypoalbuminemia were most pronounced among HIV-positive patients with tuberculosis. Weight loss was associated with loss of fat in female patients and with loss of body cell mass in male patients.

“…It is a highly infectious disease that is widely distributed throughout the globe (Gopi et al, 2008). Almost one third of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the majority of these individuals live in less developed countries (Swaminathan et al, 2008). It is commonly a disease of the lung where it forms a localized infection after inhalation.…”

“…The interaction of HIV infection, TB and malnutrition, and the response to treatment is well known in adults. [1][2][3][4][5][6] In both HIV-infected and uninfected children, malnutrition is a common feature of TB at the time of diagnosis, 7-9 but the nutritional response to anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy is less well documented, 10 and there is little information regarding the short-term effects of treatment and the influence of the acute-phase response (APR). The Western Cape Province has a particularly high incidence of TB which has increased significantly as a result of the HIV epidemic.…”
