Nutritional Status and Feeding Regimen of Patients with Esophagus Cancer—A Study from Vietnam

Abstract: Background: Esophagus cancer patients are at high risk of malnutrition. This study was performed to assess the nutritional status and dietary intake of newly diagnosed esophageal cancer patients in Vietnam National Cancer Hospital (NCH). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 206 early esophageal cancer inpatients after gastrostomy from September 2017 to June 2018. “…In their study, as assessed using BMI and mid-upper arm circumference, up to 47.6 and 50% of patients with esophageal cancer, respectively, were found to be malnourished. The percentages of patients with esophageal cancer suffering from malnutrition in terms of albumin, prealbumin and total lymphocyte counts were 10.7, 55.8 and 27.2%, respectively (4). Therefore, patients with hypopharyngeal-laryngeal and esophageal cancers will often receive nasogastric intubation or percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy for better feeding and care (5).…”

“…A total of 52.9% of the patients suffered from mild/moderate malnutrition, and 29.6% from severe malnutrition. Patients with dysphagia were 3.39 times more likely than patients without dysphagia to lose >10% of their body weight in one month [ 10 ]. In the Cao et al study regarding 1482 patients, it was noted that malnutrition occurred in 76% of the patients with esophageal cancer (using the PG-SGA screening method—Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment—score ≥4) and in 50% of the patients (using the NRS 2002 method—Nutritional Risk Screening—score ≥3) [ 11 ].…”

“…Patients suffering from GI malignancies are often in an undernourished state. LOF (late oral feeding) protocol does not prove itself to be beneficial for the patient's nutritional state, while perioperative starvation provokes a severe catabolic state ( 5 ).…”
