“…Our results concurred with previous studies that showed higher FAFH consumption may play an important role in the current obesity epidemic for adults. Away-fromhome eating has been shown to be characterized by high energy and fat intakes, especially saturated fat, along with low micronutrient intakes (7)(8)(9)20,21) , which could explain why more FAFH consumption increases the body weight indicators. A national survey among Korean adults reported that heavy FAFH consumption (obtaining ≥5858 kJ (≥1400 kcal) from FAFH per day), specifically at fullservice restaurants, was significantly related to higher BMI and WC, in which larger associations were found at higher quantiles (12) .…”

“…Public concern over the increase in food consumption away from home (as shown in our results) is justified by the reduction in nutritional quality associated with this behavior. Evidence in various countries shows that meals prepared away from home tend to have higher energy density and saturated fat and lower nutritional content than meals prepared at home 6,5,10,25,26 , so the habit of eating out has frequently been associated with excessive weight gain and has thus been identified as a key factor in the overweight and obesity epidemic in children and adults 4,8,9,27,28 . The same scenario was found in Brazil in [2008][2009], showing that individuals who reported habitually eating away from home tended to have higher total energy consumption in the diet 29 .…”

“…In six years (2002/2003-2008/2009) the participation of away-from-home foods in food expenditures in urban areas increased from one-fourth (25.7%) to one-third (33.1%), and in rural areas, from 13.1% to 17.5%. In 2008 the mean intake of away-from-home calories corresponded to approximately 16.0% of the total calorie intake and was greater in males and individuals with higher income per family member from urban areas of the Brazilian Southeast Away-from-home foods have higher energy density, fat content, and saturated fat content; and lower micronutrient content [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] . Gorgulho et al 10 assessed the quality of homemade and away-from-home meals in the municipality of São Paulo and found that the latter had lower nutritional quality, potentially contributing to the development of chronic Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD) 10 .…”
