Nutritional modulation of immune function in broilers

Abstract: Collaborative research efforts across disciplines typically result in more insight toward the hypothesis being tested due to the omnibus nature of the projects. For example, nutritional experiments evaluating a nutrient response will benefit greatly by incorporating biochemical, physiological, and immunological endpoints for measurement. Clearly, commercial poultry producers do not have the luxury of focusing on specific disciplines when field problems occur. Hence, in practice interplay exists among nutrition… Show more

“…According to Kidd (2004), beneficial effects were observed when Arg was supplemented at levels 25 and 50% higher than the established nutritional requirements. Levels close to those recommended did not improve humoral or cell-mediated immune response, despite raising Arg blood levels (Kidd, 2004).…”

“…Também não houve nenhum tipo de estresse provocado aos frangos. Na resposta imunológica, o Se é componente essencial da enzima GSH-Px, que tem como função principal detoxificar os radicais livres como os peróxidos produzidos no metabolismo normal das células, sejam no citosol ou nas membranas, em associação com a vitamina E, e com isso tem impacto na resistência a doenças (KIDD, 2004).…”

“…Furthermore, even if a wide range of ingredients were available, the preparation of adequate diets is difficult to achieve in commercial systems because of the limited storage available to feed compounders. Birds fed conventional diets that provide methionine at suboptimal levels have been shown to be predisposed to health-, welfare-and productionrelated problems (Friedman et al, 2003;Kidd, 2004;Klasing, 2006). Furthermore, birds cannot necessarily compensate for inadequate amino acid levels by increased food intake (Whitehead, 2002).…”

“…The poorer nutrient balance associated with methioninedeficient diets affects growth (Sklan and Noy, 2003) and the efficiency of the immune system, the latter being of particular significance for birds on organic systems that have access to range and are challenged repeatedly with pathogens (Pennycott and Steel, 2001;Kidd, 2004). Apart from the nutritional impact on birds, it has been proposed that diets deficient in the essential nutrients may lead to behaviours such as feather pecking and cannibalism, which have a detrimental affect on bird welfare (Wahlströ m et al,…”
