Nutritional iron supplementation studies based on enriched 57Fe, added to milk in rats, and isotope pattern deconvolution‐ICPMS analysis

Abstract: Enriched stable iron isotopes in combination with isotope pattern deconvolution and ICP-MS have been used to study the absorption and bioavailability of iron from supplemented formula milk administrated to lactating rats. The use of two enriched stable isotope tracers, one as the metabolic tracer (here (57) Fe) and the other ((54) Fe) as quantitation tracer, is shown to provide quantitative data about endogenous and exogenous (supplemented) total Fe distribution in rat feces, urine, red blood cells (RBCs), ser… Show more

“…As can be seen in Fig. 1, similar Cl isotope ratios were observed for 1 -10 mg kg -1 Cl standard solution and their relative standard deviations (%RSDs) obtained were 0.2 -0.5% which provided enough precisions for such studies as stable isotope tracers, 2,5,6 nuclear chemistry 7,8,10 and quantitative analysis of elements by IDMS. [23][24][25][26][27][28][29] The observed isotope ratios of ca.…”

“…Isotope ratio measurement of elements is well recognized to be increasingly widespread use in disciplines such as bioavailability studies using stable isotope tracers, [1][2][3][4][5][6] isotope abundance measurements in nuclear chemistry, 6-10 the determination of isotope variations in geological, environmental and cosmic samples including age determinations, 3,4,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] food authenticity, 3,4,20 or forensic science. 3,4,21,22 Isotope ratio measurement is also important for the production of accurate analytical results in trace element determinations by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS).…”

“…This is a chemometric technique based on multiple least squares for isolating distinct isotope signatures from mixtures of natural abundances and enriched tracers (33). This mathematical tool, in connection with ICP-MS and stable isotopes, has already been applied for the quantification of selenium and iron (34,35) and sulfur-containing biomolecules (32) and finding distribution of zinc in navy beans (36 …”

“…Moreover, the use of ICP-MS for 57 Fe detection ensures high sensitivity and provides quantitative data (Fiorito et al, 2012). A similar methodology was used to study the iron absorption and bioavailability from supplemented formula milk administrated to lactating rats (Gonzá lez-Iglesias et al, 2012). The Hb repletion assay is widely used in weanling pig model to asses serum iron and Hb regeneration.…”
