“…The bitter vetch seed did not contain appreciable amount of fat and its crude fat and nitrogen free extract were lower than those reported by Farran et al (2001a). Our finding for ADF was similar to those reported by Aletor et al (1994) but for NDF was higher. The differences between proximate analyses results of this study with those reported in literature could be related to different in variety and/or growth condition of seeds analyzed.…”

“…The adverse effects arise from the presence of some anti-nutritional factors in the raw seeds including L-canavanine, hemaglutinine, protease inhibitors and tannins. Canavanine, trypsin inhibitor and catechin are present in the seed at the range of 0.4-1.1 (Angeles-Garcia et al 1992), 3.46 and 2.01 g/kgDM (Aletor et al 1994), respectively. To improve the nutritional quality and to provide effective use of bitter vetch for non ruminant animals it is essential that antinutritional factors be removed or reduced.…”

“…These values are at the same level than other Vicia sp. (Aletor et al 1994), where they have showed a negative effect on the in vitro protein and starch digestibility (Alonso et al 2000;Gatel 1994), and likely somewhat similar should be expected for one-flowered vetch. The diminution of digestibility has been mainly attributed to the bond between the tannins and both the digestive enzymes and their substrates proteins and starch.…”

“…A quantidade de fatores antinutricionais em legumes varia entre e dentro de uma mesma espécie (Alitor et al, 1994;Gatel, 1994). Estabeleceu-se que a ingestão de uma quantidade significativa desses fatores por aves domésticas ou por porcos reduz o ganho do peso e aumenta o consumo (Batterham et al, 1993;Igbasan & Guenter, 1996).…”
