Aim: This study aims to determine the relationship between nutrition literacy (NL) and health literacy (HL) of adults. Subjects and Method: This cross-sectional study included 450 individuals aged 18-65 years residing in Antalya. A questionnaire including socio-demographic characteristics, health status, nutritional habits, Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32, and the Evaluation Instrument of Nutrition Literacy on Adults was applied to the subjects by face-to-face interview technique and anthropometric measurements were taken. Results: The mean age of the participants was 34.3±13.14 years. While more than half of them had inadequate (14.2%) and problematic-limited HL (37.6%), 87.3% of them were found to have adequate NL. Mean NL scores of women were found to be significantly higher than men (27.9±2.76; 26.5±3.32, p<0.001, respectively). Most of participants with adequate NL had bachelor/ postgraduate education (p<0.001). Individuals with adequate NL have significantly higher HL levels and scores than those with limited NL (p=0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). A weak positive correlation was found between HL and NL (r=0.262; p<0.05). In the multivariate model, however, subjects with inadequate HL had higher levels of inadequate NL (OR: 2.498; 95% CI: 1.284-4.859; p=0.007) and poor general nutritional knowledge (OR: 1.858; 95% CI: 1.151-2.998; p=0.011). Conclusion: According to the results of our study, it was observed that the HL scale, which was adapted to Turkish to assess HL, was insufficient in assessing NL, since there was a low correlation between NL and HL.

Nutritional behaviors remain an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. It seems obvious that unfavorable health behaviors adopted in adolescence are maintained late in adulthood and may have a profound effect on health status. The main aim of this study was to assess the association between nutritional behaviors and health literacy (HL), health locus of control (HLC), and socioeconomic variables in secondary school pupils from a voivodship (the main unit of territorial division) in southern Poland. The analysis was based on dataTable from a paper-and-pencil survey taken by 2223 pupils from schools selected as the result of cluster sampling. The survey questionnaire encompassed a set of five items asking about dietary patterns and the consumption of fruit and vegetables as well as fast food, a European Health Literacy Project Questionnaire consisting of 47 items, the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) scale, and items asking about sociodemographic and economic variables. Uni- and multivariate logistic regression models have been developed to assess the predictors of indicator nutrition behaviors. The adjusted models revealed that internal HLC was not significantly associated with any of analyzed nutritional behaviors. “Powerful other HLC” and “Chance HLC” (dimension of external HLC) were significant predictors of the selected dietary patterns. Furthermore, higher HL was associated with higher consumption of fruit and vegetables [odds ratio, 95% confidence interval (OR, 95% CI)]: 1.02 (1.01–1.04) and with lower consumption of fast food (OR, 95% CI, 0.98, 0.95–0.999). There was a significant relationship between gender, the size of the household, self-assessed economic situation, expenditures on mobile phones, and weekly duration of Internet use and selected nutrition behaviors. In conclusion, developed regression models confirmed a significant relationship between HL and the types of consumed food, but not with dieting patterns. Contrary to earlier studies, internal HLC was not associated with nutrition behaviors. In our study, boys showed more favorable nutritional behaviors than girls. More intense use of the Internet was associated with less beneficial nutritional behaviors. This study brings important results that should have an impact on health promotion interventions addressed to adolescents in southern Poland.

Health Literacy and COVID‐19 Awareness Among Preservice Primary School Teachers and Influencing Factors in Turkey

Background Primary school teachers play an important role in furnishing children with basic knowledge about health literacy and awareness of COVID‐19. This study was conducted to determine the levels of health literacy and COVID‐19 awareness among preservice primary school teachers and the factors associated with this. Methods The sample of this cross‐sectional and correlational study consists of 978 preservice primary school teachers studying at 4 major universities in Turkey. The participation rate was 90.14%. Data were collected with 3 questionnaires, the Descriptive Characteristics Form, the Health Literacy Scale, and the COVID‐19 Awareness Scale. Results The mean score of the Health Literacy scale was 105.16 (SD = 13.04). The mean scores of the Contagion Precaution Awareness, Awareness of Following Current Developments, and Hygiene Precaution Awareness subscales of the Coronavirus Awareness Scale were 34.27 (SD = 6.19), 12.94 (SD = 4.34), and 11.69 (SD = 3.60), respectively. It was determined that the total health literacy score was affected by gender, school, and grade/year (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) and that COVID‐19 awareness was affected by gender, age, grade/year, school, having contracted COVID‐19 or not, and being vaccinated or not in the various subscales (p < 0.05). Conclusions Preservice primary school teachers' health literacy was found to be sufficient with a moderate level of COVID‐19 awareness. We recommend planning interventions for preservice primary school teachers that will improve their health literacy and COVID‐19 awareness, taking influential factors into account when doing this planning.
