Nutrition and Wound Healing: An Overview Focusing on the Beneficial Effects of Curcumin

Abstract: Wound healing implicates several biological and molecular events, such as coagulation, inflammation, migration-proliferation, and remodeling. Here, we provide an overview of the effects of malnutrition and specific nutrients on this process, focusing on the beneficial effects of curcumin. We have summarized that protein loss may negatively affect the whole immune process, while adequate intake of carbohydrates is necessary for fibroblast migration during the proliferative phase. Beyond micronutrients, arginine… Show more

“…Indirect modulation refers to transcription factors, enzymes, inflammatory mediators, kinases, drug resistance proteins, adhesion molecules, growth factors, cell cycle regulation proteins and cell survival proteins. Direct action of curcumin refers to inflammatory molecules, kinases, reductases, histone acetyltransferases, integrins, DNA methyltransferase 1, carrier proteins and metal ions (Barchitta et al 2019;Gupta et al 2012).…”

“…Curcumin is not an EO, but a naturally occurring yellow chemical extracted from the rhizome of Curcuma longa, possessing a strong antioxidant effect and the ability to accelerate chronic wound repair [22][23][24]. Therefore, a large number of curcumin-based topical formulations (including films, emulsions, or hydrogels) for chronic wound treatment have been recently developed [23].…”
