Nutrition and Liver Disease

Abstract: Malnutrition in children and adults with advanced liver disease represents a tremendous challenge as the nutritional problems are multifactorial. This Editorial comments the articles appearing in this special issue of Nutrients, “Nutrition and Liver disease” dealing with multiple diagnostic and therapeutic features that relate the outcomes of liver disease to nutrition. To improve quality of life and prevent nutrition-related medical complications, patients diagnosed with advanced liver disease should have the… Show more

“…Nutrition represents a key factor in the prevention and treatment of both sarcopenia and obesity. Sarcopenia is associated with an inadequate nutritional intake, and nutritional interventions are essential to improve sarcopenia and the subsequent morbidity and mortality in chronic liver diseases (58,59). In contrast, obesity is a result of an excess consumption of energy, resulting in an imbalance between the energy intake and energy expenditure.…”

“…Chronic liver disease is a very common clinical disease. The goal of treatment is to stop the progression of the disease and its complications and the need for a multidisciplinary approach.…”

“…The effect that chronic liver disease has on the nutritional status and health of the child is determined by the cause and severity of liver disease and the age of onset. There is a two-way interaction between CLD and malnutrition: CLD often leads to malnutrition, and malnutrition negatively affects the course of liver disease (2)(3)(4)(5). Gradual loss of liver function and cirrhosis in children with CLD cause hemodynamic and metabolic disorders and severe complications such as liver and lung syndrome and renal failure.…”
