Virgin coconut oil (VCO) contains bioactive that induce immunity against infectious diseases. This study aim to determine the immunomodulatory effects of VCO based on the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), lymphocyte proliferation, and histopathological examination in liver and kidney of rats infected with Staphylococcus aureus. The VCO was given intragastrically to rats with a dose of 250 µL for one week. The rats were infected with S. aureus at 5x102 bacterial cells intraperitoneally. Twenty (20) female Wistar rats of one month old were divided into four groups. The negative control group (C-): without treatment, AV group: infected with S. aureus followed by VCO treatment; VA group: pretreated with VCO followed by S. aureus infection, and positive control group (C+): were infected with S. aureus without VCO. All rats were euthanized and necropsied based on the animal ethic standard. Plasma samples were taken to evaluate SOD activity, and lymphocytes were isolated from the spleen to determine their proliferative ability. Livers and kidneys were collected for a histopathology examination. Results showed that the VA group had the highest SOD activity on the 4th week (41.50 ± 3.56 %) and lymphocyte proliferation (0.3018) compared to all treatments, indicating immunomodulatory effects of VCO. Liver of treatments group showed leucocytes infiltration, no hemorrhages (VA); the hepatocytes with normal cells (VA). Kidney of treatments group showed leucocytes infiltration (AV); normal epithelial glomerulus and tubulus cells, still found hemorrhage (VA). These studies indicated that VCO has a potential role as an immunomodulator, hepatoprotectant, and nephroprotectant.

Coconut water (Cocos nucifera L.) is an undiluted, non-fermented beverage obtained from the liquid part of the coconut fruit. It is a versatile product in the industry and has been growing economically due to its functional character. The objective is to identify in the scientific literature different aspects of coconut water production and its nutritional characteristics applied to health. A narrative review of the literature was carried out, using the databases Scielo, Scopus, Repositório Alice da EMBRAPA, Periódicos CAPES and Google academic, applying the descriptors, coconut water, nutrition, composition, health, health benefits, economy, pasteurization, ultrapressure, ultrasound, ozone and their respective names in English, considering the Boolean operators “OR” and “AND”. Titles and abstracts were screened, considering the eligibility criteria: full text available in English and/or Portuguese; paid and/or free access; dissertations and theses, narrative, systematic review, observational and longitudinal studies, including clinical trials. Non-thermal processing methods were effective in maintaining the shelf life of the beverage, however ultrapressure showed alterations in the physical functionality and/or changes in the color of protein-rich foods. The presence of phytohormones, vitamins and amino acids was detected, which are responsible for the antioxidant property of the product, as well as the beneficial effects on health. New studies are proposed to evaluate the effects of coconut water on human health, as it is a drink with market potential and accessible to consumers.

Coconut is an economically important palm species with a long history of human use. It has applications in various food, nutraceuticals, and cosmetic products, and there has been renewed interest in coconut in recent years due to its unique nutritional and medicinal properties. Unfortunately, the sustainable growth of the coconut industry has been hampered due to a shortage of good quality seedlings. Genetic improvement through the traditional breeding approach faced considerable obstacles due to its perennial nature, protracted juvenile period, and high heterozygosity. Molecular biotechnological tools, including molecular markers and next-generation sequencing (NGS), could expedite genetic improvement efforts in coconut. Researchers have employed various molecular markers to reveal genetic diversity among coconut populations and for the construction of a genetic map for exploitation in coconut breeding programs worldwide. Whole genome sequencing and transcriptomics on the different varieties have generated a massive amount of publicly accessible sequence data, substantially improving the ability to analyze and understand molecular mechanisms affecting crop performance. The production of high-yielding and disease-resilient coconuts and the deciphering of the complex coconut genome’s structure can profit tremendously from these technologies. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the progress of coconut research, using genomics, transcriptomics, and molecular markers initiatives.
