The purpose of this study was to compile research on the advantages and challenges of using digital technology in clinical education for undergraduate nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study employed an integrative literature review with the use of the five steps as per Cooper’s framework. Data were collected from four electronic databases to access research articles published from 2019 to 2023. Out of 440 potential candidates, eighteen satisfied the inclusion criteria. Three themes emerged from the analysis namely: 1) the benefits 2) the challenges of digital technology and 3) attitudes towards the use of technology in clinical learning. The use of digital technology helps nursing students become more competent and confident in their ability to practice in a friendly environment. It is imperative that there should be opportunities for workshops to create awareness regarding the importance of digital technology. The practical implications of the study are that nursing education institutions should invest in the purchase of digital technology equipment as a means of advancing the implementation of new educational advancements. The stakeholders in clinical teaching and learning should be better equipped by health facilities and nursing education institutions to make better use of digital technologies.

Background Virtual reality can play an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic in the health care sector. This technology has the potential to supplement the traditional in-hospital medical training and treatment, and may increase access to training and therapies in various health care settings. Objective This systematic review aimed to describe the literature on health care–targeted virtual reality applications during the COVID-19 crisis. Methods We conducted a systematic search of the literature on the PsycINFO, Web of Science, and MEDLINE databases, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. The search string was as follows: “[(virtual reality)] AND [(COVID-19) OR (coronavirus) OR (SARS-CoV-2) OR (healthcare)].” Papers published in English after December 2019 in peer-reviewed journals were selected and subjected to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. We used the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool to assess the quality of studies and the risk of bias. Results Thirty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Seventeen studies showed the usefulness of virtual reality during the COVID-19 crisis for reducing stress, anxiety, depression, and pain, and promoting physical activity. Twenty-two studies revealed that virtual reality was a helpful learning and training tool during the COVID-19 crisis in several areas, including emergency medicine, nursing, and pediatrics. This technology was also used as an educational tool for increasing public understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic. Different levels of immersion (ie, immersive and desktop virtual reality), types of head-mounted displays (ie, PC-based, mobile, and standalone), and content (ie, 360° videos and photos, virtual environments, virtual reality video games, and embodied virtual agents) have been successfully used. Virtual reality was helpful in both face-to-face and remote trials. Conclusions Virtual reality has been applied frequently in medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, with positive effects for treating several health conditions and for medical education and training. Some barriers need to be overcome for the broader adoption of virtual reality in the health care panorama. Digital disruption has been the most used and discussed topic in the last 6 years and has been a trending topic on the Google trends, only second to the remote working searched on Google search engines. Most business continuities have been put at risk due to significant reasons like COVID-19, Social distancing norms, and technology disruption to name a few. Businesses especially in UAE higher education sector need to take a holistic view that considers potential threats to an organization and look at providing a resilience framework to respond effectively to safeguard the key stakeholder’s interests. The research study looks at combining the business continuity maturity model and the digital disruption models and suggests a framework that business managers and owners can consider mitigating the risks and enhancing the resilience of their organization for the future. The organization might be able to enhance its brand value and look at creating more value in its services. This study can help managers and top management look at the factors that can improve performance after the disruption. The participants can be trained to work during disruption to mitigate the risk or crisis, reducing major losses in business.
