Numerical Validation of Two-Phase Slug Flow and its Liquid Holdup Correlation in Horizontal Pipeline

Abstract: The transition of one flow regime into another is a very common phenomena in pipeline networks, which can be potentially hazardous for the structural integrity of the pipeline. Literature review showed that there is almost no reported detail investigation of transitional flow whereby the fluid constituents change from one regime to another especially slug transition. Most of the open research papers focused on slug flow regime and its liquid holdup in horizontal pipelines and channels have been carried out on … Show more

“…Several researchers who managed to develop slug flow successfully using VOF model include authors in Refs. [4,10,11,[16][17][18][19]. It was reported that the computational time required to solve the VOF equations is relatively low when compared to that of Eulerian-Eulerian and Eulerian-Lagrangian approaches, making VOF to be utilized more broadly in analyzing two-phase flow [10,12,20].…”

“…Typically, slug body length, L b can be computed using the multiplication of mixture velocity, U s of the fluids with the times taken for the slug nose, t n and tail, t t to pass through a reference line, as shown in Equation (16). Simulation work in Ref.…”

“…Multiple fluid CFD simulation have proved to provide with reliable results, as shown in [6] for air-water pair, or in [7] for oil-gasoil vapor pair. Moreover, CFD studies considering LLE-helium pair are appearing in the latest years, as is the case of [8] where an in-vessel break in the Chinese DFLL test blanket module design is simulated.…”
