“…The global HYTHIRM and the companion discrete BLT Flight Experiment measurements have fostered a diverse set of complementary work highlighting a variety of advancements in both experimental technique 27,28 and numerical modeling 29,[32][33] . In terms of CFD, turbulence models play a crucial role in the simulation of complex flows where separation, shock/boundary layer interaction, and flow reattachment are present.…”

“…The DPLR mesh and flowfield solution in the region near the boundary layer trip was obtained from NASA Ames. 26 The local DPLR solution was generated by interpolating the flowfield properties obtained from the smooth body Orbiter solution on to a 'lily pad' cylindrical mesh surrounding the boundary layer trip. The trip was centered in the cylindrical lily pad mesh which had a radius of approximately 100k, and the mesh extended from the Orbiter belly surface to the freestream flow outside of the shock layer formed around the Orbiter.…”

“…The OML is smooth, in that geometry perturbations smaller than a few inches are quilted over. In particular, the boundary layer trip on the wing is not discretely modeled in the CFD geometry; see Tang 16 for CFD modeling of the boundary layer trip and vicinity flow field. The RCC structures are not distinctly modeled.…”
