Numerical Simulation of Tornadogenesis in an Outer-Rainband Minisupercell of Typhoon Shanshan on 17 September 2006

Abstract: On 17 September 2006, three tornadoes occurred along the east coast of Kyusyu Island in western Japan during the passage of an outer rainband in the right-front quadrant of Typhoon Shanshan. To clarify the structure of the tornado-producing storms and the mechanism of tornadogenesis, quadruply nested numerical simulations were performed using a nonhydrostatic model with an innermost horizontal grid spacing of 50 m. Several simulated convective storms in the outermost rainband exhibited characteristics of a min… Show more

“…TC-associated supercells often have smaller size than classical supercells in the Great Plains and are called minisupercells [McCaul, 1987;Spratt et al, 1997;Suzuki et al, 2000;Mashiko et al, 2009;Eastin and Link, 2009]. In an idealized numerical simulation of minisupercells by McCaul and Weisman [1996], the maximum updraft was only about 40% of w max = (2CAPE) 1/2 .…”

“…Kawabata et al (2012) performed a reanalysis experiment of the typhoon using JNoVA, assimilating drop sonde observations taken by the US Air Force. Mashiko et al (2009) performed a numerical simulation of tornadogenesis in an outerrainband minisupercell of a typhoon using NHM with a grid spacing of 50 m.…”

“…2004) had been sophisticated as an operational model after ver. 2002 and has been used in a couple of studies at sub-kilometer scales (e.g., Mashiko et al 2009). Therefore; the new forward model is expected to provide accurate background fields and accurate trajectory in an assimilation window at sub-kilometer scales.…”

“…Recently, severe and small-scale phenomena such as tornados have been studied numerically in real situations owing to the increase in computer power (e.g., Mashiko et al 2009). Though the horizontal grid spacings are approaching a few ten to several hundred meters (sub-kilometer resolution), there might be no information on these horizontal scales if the initial conditions are obtained by spatial-interpolation of operational numerical prediction systems.…”
