Numerical and experimental study of the fatigue of threaded pipe couplings

Abstract: Threaded pipe couplings are used in the oil and gas industry as an alternative to welding and in applications where pipes should be frequently coupled and uncoupled as is the case for drill pipes. To maintain a sealed and secure connection while being subjected to external variable loads, they are commonly preloaded by using threaded connections with a conical shape. In this study a series of finite element analyses of conical threaded API Line Pipe couplings is carried out to quantify the influence of its con… Show more

“…In the paper (Kopei et al, 2019), it is proposed to simulate tapered threads in the FreeCAD environment using programming in Pithon. Modern CADs provide an opportunity to analyze the stress distribution between the surfaces of the box and the pin in conjunction (Wittenberghe et al, 2009) and (Wang et al, 2016). These studies confirm that the first and last turns of the subject are the most exposed.…”

“…Yu Wang et al [14] studied the stress distribution in the joint threaded by analyzing under axial tension and optimized the threaded structure of the joint. Wittenberghe et al [23] used fnite element analyses of conical threaded API line pipe couplings to quantify the infuence of their contact parameters (coefcient of friction, preload, and taper angle).…”
