Numerical Analysis of AC Loss Characteristics of Cable Conductor Assembled by HTS Tapes in Polygonal Arrangement

Abstract: Numerical studies on AC loss characteristic of a assembled conductors of multiple HTS tapes with high aspect ratio simulating YBCO tape in polygonal arrangement were presented in this paper. We developed a numerical model to analyze the AC loss in the HTS tape in the polygonally assembled conductor based on our previously developed model. The relations between the geometrical configuration and the AC loss properties of the conductor were made clear by the numerical simulation. The numerical results give the im… Show more

“…This is due to the fact that when the number of tapes increases the gap between the tapes decreases and for smaller gaps each tape experiences a magnetic field which is predominantly parallel to its width, whereas the perpendicular component near its edges tends to be smaller. The same observation has been reported in previous studies [2,3]. Since the former radius is fixed, for a given number of tapes a smaller pitch length (i.e.…”

“…Note that FEM simulation took more than 3 days to be solved while overall computation time of IM (included the matrix generation) was less than an hour. In addition, we applied the IM model to find the current distribution inside the tape in one of the cases simulated in [3] (N=8 and tape width=10 mm), and we got exactly the same results (not shown here). …”

“…2 Because superconducting cables contain multiple superconducting wires, the electromagnetic interaction among those wires must be taken into account. Numerical calculation of ac losses of superconducting cables has been extensively reported, [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] but no analytical investigation has been reported to date.…”

“…In case of AC SC-PT cable, self-field of HTS cable configuration affects AC loss properties [10]- [13]. A small gap between the HTS tapes in a single layer can reduce the AC loss, since the perpendicular magnetic field component of the self-field reduces at the tape edge due to the currents in the surrounding HTS tapes [10], [11].…”
