Number of Response Options, Reliability, Validity, and Potential Bias in the Use of the Likert Scale Education and Social Science Research: A Literature Review

Abstract: <p style="text-align: justify;">This study reviews 60 papers using a Likert scale and published between 2012 – 2021. Screening for literature review uses the PRISMA method. The data analysis technique was carried out through data extraction, then synthesized in a structured manner using the narrative method. To achieve credible research results at the stage of the data collection and data analysis process, a group discussion forum (FGD) was conducted. The findings show that only 10% of studies use a meas… Show more

“…Though, with fewer than four alternatives, the reliability and validity decrease, and from seven alternatives onwards psychometric properties of the scale scarcely increase further (Lozano et al, 2008). In addition, Kusmaryono et al (2022) reported that Likert scale with response categories (5) was the most popular than the other choices, and both response categories (5 and 7) resulted in a higher mean score and their statistical characteristics were very similar. However, the measurement spectrum was somewhat wider for longer responses.…”

“…Each item was ranked on a 5-point scale with anchors of 1 (highly unlikely) to 5 (highly likely). Likert scales are commonly used in social science research and measure qualitative data in an ordinal manner [ 56 ]. Previous research has shown them to have validity and reliability greater than 0.80 [ 57 ].…”

“…This section discusses the methods applied to report on the concept, implementation, and impact of multiple representation approach learning in elementary school science learning. The PRISMA method in this study used Scopus and ERIC databases to run systematic reviews, eligibility and exclusion criteria, review process procedures (identification, screening, eligibility), and data abstraction and analysis (Kusmaryono & Maharani, 2022;Mohd Rashid & Wong, 2023;Nizhenkovska et al, 2022).…”
