The experiment was carried out in the demonstration farm of Federal College of Forestry Jos during the 2019 farming season to determine the effects of NPK fertilizer rates and vine cutting lengths on the growth and yield of sweet potato. The treatments include, three rates of NPK fertilizer (0, 0.2 and 0.4 kg) allocated to the main plot and two vine cutting lengths of (30 and 40 cm) in the sub plot in 3 x 2 factorial split plot design. The parameters assessed includes; number of branches, length of vine, leaf count, leaf area index and vine girth at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks after fertilizer application (WAFA) and tuber count, tuber length, and yield weight at harvest. The parameters were subjected to analysis of variance and the means separated using the LSD (Least significant difference) at (p≤0.05). The results on the number of branches shows significant difference at 2 and 6 (WAFA) and at 4 WAFA for both treatments and positive interaction at 8 WAFA. Vine length showed no statistical difference at 4 WAFA, but significance at 2 and 8 WAFA with positive interaction at same weeks. The results on leaf count showed significance across the weeks with fertilizer rates and at 2 WAFA with vine cuttings with no interactions across the trend. The leaf area index showed no statistical difference with all the treatments as indicated. The vine girth showed significant difference across the weeks with fertilizer rates, and at 10 WAFA with the vine cuttings with no interactions. The yield parameters showed significance and positive interaction across with both treatments on tuber count, tuber weight and tuber length respectively. In conclusion, these results indicated that planting sweet potato in Jos plateau with a fertilizer rates of (0.4 kg/2m2 experimental plot) and 40 cm vine length could impact the growth and yield positively.

La batata (Ipomoea batatas L.) es una especie de importancia económica, ya que contribuye a la seguridad alimentaria de millones de personas. Sin embargo, en Colombia esta especie es subutilizada, cultivándose de forma artesanal en la región Caribe. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar las características agronómicas de germoplasma de batata, bajo las condiciones agroambientales del departamento del Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Se sembraron 29 genotipos usando un diseño de bloques completos al azar y 27 genotipos, para su uso como parentales en una parcela única y evaluar la producción de semilla sexual para procesos de recombinación genética. Se encontró una respuesta diferencial entre los genotipos evaluados, sobresaliendo el genotipo 1115-200_BOL con un rendimiento de raíces tuberosas totales y de primera categoría de 64.9 t ha-1 y 52.7 t ha-1 respectivamente, y un porcentaje de raíces tuberosas de primera categoría del 81 %. En la producción de estructuras reproductivas, los genotipos que se destacaron fueron 0615-070_COR, 1215-227_BOL y la variedad Agrosavia Aurora. Todas estas características indicaron es posible establecer procesos de mejoramiento y la inserción de la batata como cultivo, bajo las condiciones agroambientales del Valle del Cauca. Además, se identificaron como posibles cultivares comerciales los genotipos 1115-200_BOL y 1215-232_SUC para esta región de Colombia.

In Ukraine, the area under garlic is increasing and as of 2020 amounted to 1,100 hectares, due to the high profitability of production and constant demand in both domestic and foreign markets. At the same time, the evaluation of existing and new varieties of winter garlic is important for further growth in yields of this important crop. The aim of the research is to assess the genetic diversity of the studied varieties of winter garlic by ISSR loci and to determine the most productive in the conditions of the Left Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. Winter garlic varieties Duchess, Lyubasha and Hungarian (line 20-16) were used for the research. The highest level of marketable yield (14.1 t / ha) was obtained when growing winter garlic of Lyubasha. The Hungarian variety (Line 20-16) provided a yield of 12.9 t / ha, the Duchess variety 9.4 t / ha. The formation of winter garlic yield by 12.3 % depended on the characteristics of the variety, the influence of the growing season was 87.3 %. Agronomically stable (As ˃ 70 %) was the winter garlic variety Hungarian (Line 20-16) with As = 73.8 %. Based on the above studies, allelic formulas (molecular genetic passports) of winter garlic varieties Hungarian (Line 20-16), Lyubasha and Duchess were formed. In the studied varieties of winter garlic, several amplicons were found, unique within the study group. The UCC812725 and UBC 812902 loci were unique in the Duchess variety, and the UBC 812791 and UBC 842702 loci were unique in the Lyubasha variety. The calculated Nei–Li similarity coefficients indicate a significant genetic similarity of the studied varieties of winter garlic. The Lyubasha and Duchess varieties are genetically closer to each other than the Hungarian varieties (Line 20-16).
