Abstract: In this paper I present a description of number in Panará, with singular, dual and plural, and discuss the mass-count properties of Panará nouns. I also describe an until now unattested instance of omnivorous dual in Panará, where one dual morpheme can map to one or more arguments.

Este artigo apresenta uma descrição preliminar da distinção contável/massivo em Kaingang, língua Jê, falada no Sul do Brasil. Primeiro, mostramos que não há, nos nomes, marcador morfológico exclusivo para o plural. Mostramos que processos morfológicos nos verbos (supleção, reduplicação, prefixação do morfema kyg-) podem estar associados à pluralidade de eventos (iteratividade) e à distinção singular versus plural em argumentos verbais. Segundo, mostramos que construções com numerais e quantificadores podem ser usadas para distinguir nomes contáveis e massivos na língua Kaingang. Nomes contáveis podem ser combinados diretamente a numerais enquanto nomes massivos requerem uma unidade de contagem/medida nestas construções. Da mesma forma, nomes contáveis ocorrem com o quantificador contável ’e ‘muitos’, com interpretação de cardinalidade. Por outro lado, nomes massivos ocorrem com o quantificador mág ‘muito’, com interpretação de volume. Mostramos ainda que alguns nomes massivos, em contextos em que a unidade de contagem/medida é saliente, podem ocorrer diretamente combinados a numerais/quantificador contável.
