Bringing into scene the theoretical route followed by The Obrigatory Contour Principle (OCP), Kaingáng; Parkatêjê; Je languages; Tonal languages, the present article has, among its aims: to contribute to the determination of the nature of such principle and to get evidence for a possible parameterization of it. In order to do so, we, based on specific phonological apects of some languages (genetically related or not) spoken in Brasil, will investigate them from the point of view of two interrelated theoretical questions which are still accepted, even in a representational model, and which refer to OCP evaluational contexts and its weakening from certain distances. The conclusions reached here allow us to sustain the hypothesis that the nature of OCP is linked to features involving articulation and perception. They also allow us to suggest that the OCP can be parameterized: its evaluation contexts can be minimally altered, according to the language, and its application is not affected by other restrictions with which it interacts.
In order to explain the syntactic behavior and describe the meaning of the item ambos in Brazilian Portuguese, we propose, assuming the Distributed Morphology framework, (1) that the acategorial root amb- merges, in the syntactic derivation, to a D that moves from inside a full definite DP, and this D categorizes the root; (2) that amb-+D merges back to the DP which D was the head of; (3) that the lower copy of D is erased (or becomes invisible) when the derivation reaches LF; (4) that the meaning of the combination of D and amb- is defined only if the context provides a unique set of two individuals with the properties defined by the plural NP taken by ambos, and introduces a universal quantification over this set.
ABSTRACT:The goal of this paper is twofold: on the one hand, we aim at clarifying aspects of the phonology and morphology of Akroá and Xakriabá, to the extent that these are discernible on the basis of both the interpretation of XIX century vocabulary lists collected by explorers and the comparison with their closest extant relatives, the Xavante and Xerente languages. On the other hand, we show that, by means of this comparison, our knowledge of the nature of the relations among these four languages is greatly advanced, contributing in this way to the historical investigation of the Jê languages at large. KeywoRdS: Akroá; Xakriabá; Akwen; Historical Linguistics.
